Summary Of What Makes A Hero By Philip Zimbardo

Improved Essays
The best definition of a hero, as explained by Philip Zimbardo in “What Makes a Hero?” is, helping others in need without expecting anything in return. For example, Zimbardo tells the story of a massive earthquake in one of China’s provinces where the ceiling fell on a school and killed almost everyone inside, “[One] kid escaped and as he was running away he noticed two other kids struggling to get out. He ran back and saved them.” (Zimbardo). This kid saved the other two children knowing that he could have gotten stuck, and he saved them without expecting any sort of reward. In addition, Zimbardo tells a story of another hero: “Irena Sendler was a Polish hero… who saved at least 25,000 Jewish kids who were holed up in the Warsaw ghetto that

Heroism Defined Joseph Campbell said “A hero is someone who has given his or her life to something bigger than oneself”. When heroes risk their own life for others it makes them much more heroic. Anybody could try to help out, and do what they can when in a crisis, but then give up and save themselves. Heroes keep going no matter how dangerous the problem is. Instead of being worried and afraid, they become brave and powerful.…

Irena Sendler was a Polish nurse, humanitarian, and social worker who served in the Polish Underground during World War II in Warsaw. The German had already taken over Warsaw at the time. Irena was the head of the children's section of Zegota, the Polish Council to Aid Jews which was active from 1942 to 1945. Assisted by some two dozen other Zegota members, Sendler smuggled approximately 2,500 Jewish children out of the Warsaw Ghetto and then provided them with false identity documents and shelter with adoptive Polish families, in orphanages or other care facilities.…

After reading the essay “Heroism: Why Heroes are Important” by Scott LaBarge once, I went back again and read it a second time. The second time I read it, I looked specifically for the use of rhetorical appeals, and I then began to write my essay. The first thing I did was use my analysis of LaBarge's use of rhetorical appeals to create my thesis statement: “LaBarge effectively uses the rhetorical appeals of ethos, logos, and kairos to convince his audience that heroes are important.” I then looked for specific examples of each appeal I said he used in order to develop support for my thesis.…

Informative Essay Elizabeth Svoboda, the author of “What Makes a Hero” created a book that will help individuals with identifying and understanding what a hero is with many perspectives and experiences. Throughout the book, Svoboda clarified what a hero was within each chapter and shown how people find out what they can do to help others or in other words be a hero. The book illustrated rhetorical appeals within Chapter five, which is titled “suffering and Heroism”; Svoboda put to use pathos, ethos and logos because she described the story of Jodee Blanco of how her emotions and feelings from being abused and not socially accepted throughout high school to becoming socially accepted and a hero as an adult. People can connect with pathos appeal…

Now, there is no clear-cut answer to “What does it mean to be a hero?” Any individual, male or female, wealthy or poor, strong or weak, old of young, can be a hero. Any individual who is capable of standing before a crowd and acts on their words, can be a hero. A hero is anyone that has the ability to inspire a group of people, or even themselves.…

Hero’s are everyday people that have done something for the greater good. A hero is a person who has gone out of their way to help or save something or someone from danger. The Merriam Webster Dictionary defines a hero as, a person, typically a man who is admired for having courage or having outstanding achievements (Merriam-Webster). In my opinion this book definition is wrong, because heroes aren’t just men. Heroes can range from being a small town sports team that just won a state championship or soldiers who saved a community from a terrorist group.…

I think a hero is a person who will help anyone and even risk their life for someone else. You don't need to be kind all the time to be a hero and here are two examples from The Outsiders. Johnny the youngest of the group has done many bad things but is a hero because when the church was on fire he went in the flaming church and saved the people inside the church with his friends. Ponyboy is a hero in this story because he thinks anyone can change and wanted to help the people see the light and stay gold. In The Outsiders Johnny says stay gold…
