Buddhism came from Northern India in the 5th century. It has to do with Siddhartha Gautama, also known as Buddha which means "Awakened" or "Enlightened One". It is said that he is the person that started this all. Siddhartha is said to have seen the people in our world suffering and wanted to try and find a solution. He found a solution by meditating and using analysis, and by doing so he was able to reach an enlightened state that helped end the suffering of people, and when he died, he was released from the cycle of rebirth, samsara, which is also what Buddhists try to achieve, it is known as enlightenment.

The three main ones are Tripitaka also known as Pali Canon it is called Pali Canon because it is named after the language that it was written in., Mahayana Sutras and the Tibetan Book of the Dead. The Tripitaka is the holy book, and is the earliest writing of the teachings of Buddha. The Tripitaka means three baskets, which are called the discipline basket, discourse Basket and the last one is higher knowledge and special teachings. The way that it is setup is different in every region. Some are strictly hierarchical, others are like a family business. Some have central governing bodies. Some are focused on the government, others point towards the community. But there is always some type of hierarchy involved in the organization.

The first belief is that nothing is ever really lost in the universe. It is similar to the idea of the circle of life. For example when a animal dies, it then decomposes and becomes part of the soil, then a seed will sprout and become a plant. We come from our parents and our children are born from us. Next thing is that everything changes. Like our evolution from bacteria to the beings we are today. The last thing is the law of cause and effect this is known as karma. Nothing ever happens to us unless we have done something to deserve it.
