The ability of an individual to recognize who they are, related to others around them, is a skill that can’t be taught, but more so, learned through experience. How we interact with our peers can give great insight to how we come to better understand them. As a health professional, it is important to self reflect on our actions towards others and recognize the areas that may be bias. Nurses are involved in the many areas of our patients lives, not only their physical health, but also the areas of their life that may be revolved around their health such as their different ethnicity, socioeconomic class, race and social role in society. Being able to identify our personal attitudes, and resultantly, our personal behaviors towards these different …show more content…
My father’s religion is classified as Greek Orthodox and my mother was raised Protestant. As there are differences in these religions, it was settled that the Bible is the main determinant in our house. I have many friends and family members who don’t necessarily believe in the Bible or its viewpoint. Not pushing my views onto them, and vice versa, has kept our relationship balanced in many areas. Because there are hundreds of religious groups in one society alone, it is important to become open to these beliefs, even if they may be different from your …show more content…
How an individual is represented in society is not the basis to who they are as a person. Whether it is their social group or at a broader stance, their socioeconomic class, the professional demeanor we exhibit at the bedside can show how we acknowledge the group or class in which they identify, and allow ourselves to better accommodate to their individual needs. Having a patient who is homeless, it was important to welcome in their concerns about the cost of care that was being provided and be mindful of my personal actions towards them. In retrospect, when caring for an individual whose last concern is money, it was important to not allow the feelings I dealt with from my homeless patient, to cloud my judgment with an opposite situation. My behavior towards these two unique circumstances would not be affected by how they present to the hospital, nor would it cloud my judgment in their plan of

While sadly this was not the last instance of such, my time at the hospital complemented my own experience and fostered my understanding of socio-economical barriers on individuals’ health. I aspire to continue my engagement in community-based care services through medical school – if I am to become an effective physician, I must learn first-hand about the health concerns of local populations. At SCC, I look forward to participate in JOPE and advocate for improved care of patients living in homeless…

Of the three prominent sociological perspectives, I have chosen to cover the functionalist perspective for this paper. According to functionalism, society is a system of interconnected parts that work together to maintain peace and equivalence. Functionalists believe society is held together by social consensus in which the members of society comply to and work to achieve, what is best for society altogether. I chose this perspective because I identify with it and find this perspective to be very interesting. This perspective became popular in the nineteen forties and nineteen fifties, Robert Merton and Emile Durkheim were big functionalist in this perspective.…

Sociological Assessment As I was reading about all the sociological problems older adults endured. It saddened me to know that we just discard them as if they are just useless. We need to change that negative stigma about the elderly population, change our mindsets as a society because at the end, we will all have to go through that stage of life. The present is a sociological assessment for Bessie Delany.…

I was raised as a Protestant Christian. I grew up in Evans, Georgia, a small town in the heart of the south and a community where most of the people believed in the same things. I knew a few Mormons, a few Muslims, and a few Catholics, but the majority of the people in my circle were either professing Protestant Christians or raised in a culture of Judeo-Christian beliefs. I’ve always enjoyed talking to people about their beliefs, especially when they differ significantly from mine, but it was hard to do this in the small southern town where I was raised. I moved away from Evans in the middle of my freshman year because my dad got a new job in San Antonio, Texas.…

    1. Four main issues I presented in this video are race, sex, socio-economic status, and culture. The video appeared to have an overall framework of African American men, stereotyped into a single group of limited income, inept, as well as suffering from mental illnesses. I believe that it portrayed the worldview of most of white America in an accurate way. According to our textbook, worldview is defined as, “our psychological orientation in life and can determine how we think, behave, make decisions, and define events” (Mio, Barker, & Tumambing, 2009, p. 8).…

Victoria, You mention how our diverse cultural, social, and economical backgrounds shape our beliefs and perceptions about health and our tolerance of others. This is a good point to address as sometimes nurses’ beliefs and values influence their nursing practice. It can sometimes contribute to health disparities too. Eliminating health disparities is ranked by the National Institute of Health as the third top priority health issue. Health disparities have been highlighted in both the Health People 2000 and 2010.…

Maria believes that nurses can provide appropriate care for culturally diverse patients if they see everyone as equal, “Although, the first people we see is the nurse. I, as a patient, assume that the nurse is being bias, when in reality he or she is only doing their job” (M. Avina, personal communication, (11/4/2015). Asking her to elaborate, she explains that she thinks it all starts from the top, “It’s the healthcare facilities and hospitals that need to improve their way of picking and choosing who gets treated first,” she continued, “ respect is a big thing too, because nurses can learn how to respect us. Sometimes, when we’re at the hospital, I don’t feel respected. Nurses can learn to do that, that’ll help,” (M. Avina, personal communication,…

All these comments are very hurtful, and can lead nurses to behave harshly towards the patient. However, nurses have a key role in setting the tone and atmosphere in clinical settings. They have to value their patients in situations like this, and the only way this can happen is when nurses are able to value themselves even though their confidence and self-esteem might be triggered in negative environments (Ferns & Meerabeau, 2008). Therefore, empirically, this article supports my actions towards the racial comments I received because I was able to set the tone in the environment and value the…
