This classification is given to drugs that have no medicinal uses and high risk for abuse. However, two states have legalized marijuana for adult recreational use. As well as 21 other states passed laws permitting usage as treatment for medical conditions. These states are California and Colorado. Later in the paper will discuss the effect of legalization.
Marijuana is usually smoked or mixed with food as called eatables. The effects and levels of efficiency do vary with the different methods of consumption. For example Marijuana is smoked in joints or blunts, pipes or bongs. Marijuana when smoked produces a strong overpowering and unique, usually compared to snuck odor. Marijuana eatables it is usually mixed in food, mostly brownies or brewed with tea. When marijuana is inhaled, THC goes from the lungs into the blood. Then its transported to the brain and other parts if the body. Also when inhaled, THC reaches the brain in as little as 14 seconds. As stated earlier Colorado and California are the two states that have legalized medical marijuana, which help fight symptoms including pain and nausea caused by cancers, and other conditions. However, clinical studies have not shown the therapeutic benefits of the marijuana plant outweigh its health risks. According to the FDA, ‘to be considered a legitimate medicine by the FDA, a substance must have well-defined and measurable ingredients that are consistent from one unit (such as a pill or injection) to the next.” Due to Cannabis sativa containing other chemical compounds that have different effects, and because it is consumed via smoking, its classification as a medicine is difficult to evaluate.
