Should Schools Have Dress Codes

Decent Essays
Imagine a place where every hallway you go down there is something on somebody's shirt that makes you feel self conscious or uncomfortable. Students would have to constantly be in a place where they feel that they have to try hard to fit in with their clothes. No one should feel like they always have to try to impress people, therefore all high schools should have dress codes. Some may argue having dress codes limits a student’s freedom of expression. The right to express oneself is important. We must respect the feelings of others, and learn how to successfully operate in the real world. Also, instead of expressing yourself through clothing you can express yourself through accessories; for example, shoes, necklaces, scarves. Students can express themselves by playing a sport, performing on stage or do another type of art. Art is one of the best ways one can express themselves. Lots of students think they can express who they are by what they are wearing and how short their shorts/skirt is or how small the top they are wearing is but that isn’t the way to show who one is. …show more content…
We are all too concerned in this country about looks and having a dress code would create a better learning environment. Kids want to fit in, and if dress codes are required they wouldn’t have to worry as much about what clothes they’re wearing. Inappropriate clothing can be distracting to fellow students who are trying to learn. Although kids may think they have the right to wear what they want short skirts/shorts, small tops, and low pants are not helpful in the school. With less distractions students can concentrate on getting better grades, and then overall there would be a better, less distracting learning

If the schools did not have dress codes, the students would be able to wear clothing that is inappropriate or distracting to the other students, and it could take away from the other students’ learning. Without a dress code, student could also wear clothes that promote illegal things like underage drinking or gangs. Schools also typically regulate some of the things that students can say. An example of this is that students are usually punished in some way if they say inappropriate word or insult teachers or other students. This is obviously a necessary thing for schools regulate.…

Without school uniforms, enforcement of of a dress code is difficult and a burden on school staff. By dressing professionally, students receive more respect from teachers and peers alike. Students who wear uniforms are also more prepared for the rigors of various dress codes in adult life after their school years. Ever since we started school we’ve had to deal with dress code. However, schools have different rules such as whether you have to wear uniforms or how short your skirts can be. My elementary school required us to wear uniforms and as the years went on the dress code got progressively stricter. When I moved on to high school it wasn’t much better. They would constantly send people to the office to get a change of clothes, but by doing this they also removed students from their classes, making them fall behind.…

Love them or hate them, we are all familiar with dress codes. Some say that they minimize distractions, others say that they minimize creativity. Whether you like it or not, I will throw my hat into the ring, and talk of why I think dress codes are unhealthy for school environments. Shockingly, there is a lot of evidence that supports the claim that dress codes are negative. Dress codes have lost their use, target teenage girls more than boys, and don’t teach kids responsibility.…

We all know that group of girls who show up to school with their breast popping out of their shirts, butts hanging out of their shorts, and belly shirts that show way too much skin. Obviously, dressing like this to school is in no way appropriate, and should be addressed. Another argument of why the dress code should be enforced is the fact that school is a learning environment and that we should be teaching kids how to dress for the future. By doing this, you are helping young adults understand that wearing a crop top or (for boys) wearing saggy pants to an interview definitely won’t get you a job. Others may say that enforcing the dress code, like providing school uniforms, will help families that are in poverty and will decrease bullying when it comes to making fun of someone’s…

The dress code should be less strict in that we dress to show our personalities and express ourselves. It should also be less derogatory towards female students, because “their bodies will distract the boys,” is a sexist statement claiming that boys will be boys and that girls just need to deal and accept it. Most girls breaking the dress code do not do it for attention, but when they spend money on clothes that have nothing wrong with them they want to wear them. In fact, it is hard to find clothes manufactured to actually fit the “dress code” due to designers conforming to society's new…

At least 58% of schools in the United States enforce a strict dress code. School dress codes and uniforms in private and public schools can be both helpful and harmful to students in relation to their learning and social skills. Implementing school dress codes has shown to increase concentration in the classroom due to the lack of extreme clothing or hair styles, less peer pressure since everyone has to wear the same clothes, and an increase in school safety. According to Don Woodard, a high school principal in Johnston county, The students’ “demeanor is better and there are fewer distractions because of teasing, or students being uncomfortable because of the apparel that others are wearing.” But they also say it's unconstitutional because schools are taking away students freedom of expression.…
