The theme of savagery versus civilisation is shown through the symbol of the conch shell. The conch shell can affiliate with Ralph since he is the first person to use it. During the assembly, he becomes elected as the leader of the boys. The conch shell can help gather meetings, it can also symbolize the authority amongst the boys. When the boys hold their first assembly, Ralph says “I’ll give the conch to the next person to speak” (Golding 25). This can display civilization because Ralph allows each boy to use their voice to speak their opinion. This can prove that matter what, the conch will permit each boy a chance to speak while the rest of the boys will listen. The conch symbolizes and represents order, rational thought and civilization. All of the boys are acknowledging each and everyone’s viewpoint, which be can be an effective plan because listening to each other can begin the process of surviving together. The signal fire that is created by the boys is used for a hope of rescue. Ralph thinks of the idea of burning a fire to generate smoke; the boys attempt to keep the fire igniting. The boys try to keep the fire alive in hopes of rescue, and it works. With the smoke that comes from the fire, the Naval officer notices the bots because of the smoke that has engulfed the island, “We saw your smoke” (Golding 135). As the boys hold onto the hope of the being rescued from the burning fire, they are finally rescued from the smoke that they tried to keep alive. This can prove the civilization between the boys. Even though they are exhausted from the effort, their plans and willpower will help the boys achieve their goals. In contrast, the signal fire can also be a technology that can threaten destruction if it gets out of control. The destruction seen from the fire can also reveal the side of savagery. Everything on the island changes when the conch and Piggy’s glasses is destroyed. The death of Piggy also causes a huge impact on the boys. Every boy besides Ralph on the island switches into Jack’s tribe, which leaves Ralph all alone and isolated. In Jack’s increasing savagery, Jack wants to ensure that Ralph does not live.
