In the memoir “The Glass Castle” by Jeannette Walls she focuses on the struggles and strange parenting skills of the Walls. Rose Mary Walls is a selfish free-spirit who values self-sufficiency and resents her children because in her mind they are standing in the way of her being a journalist.
Jeannette Walls outlines Rose Mary’s unique outlook on life by demonstrating her selfish free-spirited behavior. One way Rose Mary demonstrates her selfish behavior was when she was eating a huge family sized Hershey bar while her children were in the same room starving. “I can’t help it” she sobbed. Another way Rose Mary shows her selfish behavior is when Brian and Jeanette were scrounging around and they find a diamond ring and they believe that the ring will do the family good but Rose Mary decides to keep it for herself. “She was keeping the wedding ring she explained to replace the wedding ring her mother gave her, the one dad pawned shortly after they got married. “But mom” I said “That ring could get us a lot of food.” “That's true” mom said “but it could also improve my self-esteem and at times like these self-esteem is even more vital than food.” (line 22-24, page 186) This shows how truly selfish Rose Mary is that she would keep a two karat diamond ring that she does not need instead of providing her children with food or clothes. The reader can see Rose Mary’s true colors and see how she only cares about herself when she tells Jeanette that self-esteem is more vital than food. …show more content…
Jeanette demonstrates what kind of person Rose Mary is by showing how she doesn't even care her daughter is leaving to start a new life. “I’m not upset because I’ll miss you” mom said “I’m upset because you get to go to new York and I’m stuck here it’s not fair.” (line 25-26, page 237) This shows Rose Marys selfish behavior coming out again. She should be happy her daughter is going out into the world trying to make a better life for herself. But instead of her being happy she is upset that she has to stays home. She had the chance to live her life it is her fault she didn't chose to live it the way she wanted now she takes it out on her children. In addition, the reader can also see what kind of person Rose Mary is when she tells Jeanette she is a sell out. “Look at the way you live. You’ve sold out next thing I know, you’ll be a republican.” she shook her head. “Where are the values I raised you with” (line 22-24, page 269) This illustrates how Rose Mary disapproves of Jeanette's job and lifestyle. Rose Mary spent her whole life rebelling against the system and she has the audacity to say where are the values I raised you with. Throughout Jeanette's life she only taught her bad values that should not be carried
