The gas bubbles was caused by the mixture of baking soda and phenol red. Though we did not have any labs in which liquid was exempt from the experiment it is something that we were looking at as a possible future trial. In the future we could mix calcium chloride with sodium bicarbonate to observe the reaction but i think that if the two were mixed without any liquid then there would not be any significant change. The reasoning is that sodium bicarbonate needs some source of liquid to create it’s chemical reaction and same goes for calcium chlorides growth in warmth they need something to dissolve themselves down so the two substances can mix. The mixture of Sodium Bicarbonate, Phenol Red and Calcium Chloride caused a chemical reaction which produced gas and the bag to expand. This reaction could have resulted in a new substance being produced. The new substance could have been produced by the mixing of calcium chloride and sodium bicarbonate and the production of …show more content…
The lab had calcium chloride and sodium bicarbonate placed with the same bag and then red phenol was added and the chemical substances were mixed together. The result was a rapid increase in the gas within the bag, one substance turned a bright yellow and the other a fuchsia pink. The yellow substance was very warm while the pink substance was cold. From this lab three experiments were created in one mixed calcium chloride with red phenol to see if the calcium or the sodium bicarbonate was the reason for the gas in the bag. There was no gas expansion so it can be inferred that the sodium bicarbonate was the cause for the gas. Another experiment was a mixture of sodium bicarbonate and red phenol to test if the sodium was the cause for the rise in heat. When the two were mixed together there was no increase in heat which leads to the conclusion that the calcium chloride was the cause of the temperature increase. The last lab was a mixture of water and calcium chloride to see if the red phenol was the sole cause for the change in color. There was no color change when the two substances were
