This was not uncommon, being that from 1825 to 1925, more than 750,000 Norwegians settled into homes in Canada and the United States (lonelyplanet.com). They established a home in Iowa. Because of that, the transition was a major one. They were a poor family, so finding a job was urgent. His mother became a housekeeper for a family named the Radcliffe's (Self). During all of this, three kids were born. Milford is my great grandfather, Elmore was his brother and Helena, his sister. Even with the jobs being withheld, money was still hard to come by. When Milford was three years old, his mother died. Consequently, his father couldn't bear to stay with the kids so he disappeared (Self). The Radcliffe's kindly adopted the three children. Even though the Radcliffe's could afford a housekeeper, finances were still an issue. The 1920's brought hardships for the people of Iowa, especially the farmers. It was found to be difficult for the farmers to make payment for debts from the war. As the economy worsened, due to the Great Depression, hardships doubled for the Iowans. Prices were dropping drastically for farmer's goods. Only when Franklin Roosevelt's New Deal …show more content…
Although their parents had immigrated, Oberly and her husband stayed in Norway. They would often write letters back and forth between Norway and Iowa. She must have gotten a hint of some sorts as to how cold it was during Iowa's winters and took it upon herself to send them coats. "I see by you letter that the coats fit; they wear them. I imagine, in winter when it is cold. I meant them for use only on week-days" (Oberly). It's interesting that she only intended for them to be worn on weekdays. It was most likely for the purpose of staying warm at

The Great Depression modified the lives of individuals who lived on and cultivated the Great Plains and thus, changed America. Although farmers stumbled upon multiple farming obstacles during this time, the agriculture was more extensively impacted when the national economy declined in the 1920s. Amid this time period, agriculturists attempted to adapt to the low offering costs of their harvests. These lower costs implied that farmers expected to develop more real estate, including poorer farmlands, or change crop assortments to sufficiently deliver grain to meet their required hardware and homestead needs. Farmers’ income had declined steadily during the decade because of overproduction of cash crops, falling crop prices, rising farm costs,…

I interviewed Jerry, Faith Green, Paul, Ms.Darshan, and Mr. Hanke. They were all very helpful because Faith and Jerry were IPoly students and I felt that I could really relate to them because I still haven't decided what I'm going to be. Ms. Darshan explained to us that we need to be responsible for our selves and that some textbook prices vary because they all cost a lot. Paul gave us advice in if we weren't sure what we are going to do we should find a common class that the careers I want to pursue have in common. Mr. Hanke told us that we need to stay focused in school because some people who try different things and don't get into it change who they want to be very quickly.…

My grandfathers family did this because they were poor and it helped make the food more filling. He continued the tradition and raised his children with peanut butter on everything. It took his kids awhile to start enjoying it but once they did they would always ask for the delicious sweet spread on everything!…

An Immigration Story For my creative writing piece I decided to focus on the genre of podcasts. Podcasts are a common medium used to inform and interact with an audience. I choose to do a podcast because my topic at hand, immigration, can be very broad and contains a lot of information. The video format allowed for a more direct connection to the audience. Though the general public could be considered the audience for this piece, I found it more important to target an audience less informed with immigration.…

Everyone in America comes from a different background, but only a fraction are the children of immigrants, and an even smaller fraction are the first generation to apply to college. I grew up in quite a different household. My whole family is 100% Lebanese so that means I grew up with a 100% un-American background. My parents left Lebanon a couple years before their first child was born and moved to the United States. They knew that they wanted their future three children to live out of fear and away from all the chaos that was happening in the Middle East at the time.…
