Why do I, Mishayla Moffitt, want to pursue a career in healthcare? It all started when I was in preschool and finally beginning to understand how the world works and what my dad did for a job. My dad is so passionate and caring towards his patients and he never goes home till the last sick patient is seen for the day. My dad is a family physician and from the age of five, I had my heart set on being a great doctor just like him.…
I never was the most confident person when it came to competing. I always felt discouraged because I “knew” there would be people better than me. Towards the end of my junior year in high school a special program was announced to the students. “Doc Prep” was a weeklong trip to Baylor College of Medicine that gave ten students the opportunity to witness heart surgeries, practice suturing, handle human brains, and meet many interesting people. Who wouldn’t want to be part of this enriching experience?…
My day started a bit off, I had an emergency that morning that made me run a bit late for clinical. This made me miss some important information such as, how nurses in NCBH hand over to the next shift, but aside that, I had a wonderful day working with nurse Mrs. Osei. She welcomes me by introducing herself, which I responded likewise. She took me with her to do her morning rounds and administer medication to her assigned patient. After we were done with her morning medication, I went to one of her patient whom I was assign to by Mrs. Natasha to perform mini mental survey and general assessment on the patients.…
My clinical experience so far has been quite interesting, because I learned basic clinical procedures and preventions that I know will benefit me as a nurse in the near future. During lab, we discussed infection control, personal hygiene, and isolation precautions. These procedures impact my personal health and wellness, because I need to ensure that I am using the proper techniques in order to keep me safe. Also, I know that it is important to make sure my patients are not at risk of developing hospital associated infections.…
As an undergraduate, I gained invaluable hands-on clinical experience working in the University Health Services Clinic. I was able to directly interact with the patients, listen to their concerns, take their vitals, and network with nurses, practitioners and physicians about their condition and treatment plan. I worked on a team of medical professionals…
Prior to my experience in the Columbia University Summer Public Health Scholars Program (SPHSP), I simply wanted to “help people”. This broad and shallow reason for my pursuit of a medical degree has since been redefined. My pursuit of a medical degree is greatly strengthened by the Columbia University Summer Public Health Scholars Program (SPHSP). During the SPHSP the program exposed us to Federally Qualified Health Centers (FQHC) and my eyes were opened to unique way help people.…
Most little girls dream of being a ballerina when they grow up, I was the little girl who dreamed of medical school. Anyone who was brave enough to ask got my vehement no when asked if I thought that the college, subsequent medical school, and training would be too much school or that I would get bored. I decided very early that to be a doctor was one of the most exciting things that a person could chose to be and my fantastic pediatrician was the initial spark for this love of medicine. The care that I could see him exhibit in his daily operations as well as the ease at which he interacted with patients and parents alike inspired me. His knowledge was fascinating and I longed to have that level of understanding of the human body.…

During my gap year I have gained experiences and have met people who’ve inspired me to become an osteopathic physician. The clinical experience that I gained through being a chiropractic assistant will last with me for a lifetime. Working with patients in a one on one setting allowed my skill set to grow as an eager, and young applicant. The doctor I had the pleasure of working for, Dr. Etheredge, exemplified amazing patient care. He also ran his practice in a honest and ethical way.…
Upon entering high school I knew I wanted to have a career in the health field but never really knew what I wanted. My high school experience was not bad I have fond memories however it was not the best education. The program opened my eyes but it only gave a me a little taste to what options are out there and what I would really like. I have always been a good student striving for more in my education.…
My clinical setting recognizes the importance of providing opportunities for employees to grow professionally. There are many resources committed to the ongoing professional development of nurses. Nurses who are interested in continuing education may be eligible for tuition reimbursement of $2000 per semester. In order to be qualified, employees must regularly be scheduled to work 32 hours or more, attend an accredited college and earn satisfactory grades for the courses. On top of the tuition reimbursement, there is also education money of $700 a year.…

My family has many nurses, my mom included, that are role models for me. Conversations about work and health conditions was a reoccurring topic over the the dining table. Where other young kids may have been left with babysitters or daycare centers, my mom brought me with her to her job at a nursing home. Healthcare is my favorite class in high school. I am always excited to tell my mom the new procedure I learned.…
I have known from a young age that I wanted to do something exceptional in my life. Something about helping others drew me in, so I knew a career in the medical field would be my best fit. It was not until a traumatic day in my life occurred that made me realize I was bound to be a nurse. I have played volleyball for five year, my senior year was not an exception. Volleyball was the only sport I played and my passion.…
