Personal Narrative: Being The Only Foster Kid

Improved Essays
The neighborhood I grew up in nine years ago had a major impact on my life. I gained friendships that i won't ever forget. I learned that everything isn't as it seems, that life is give and expect to be given. I lived through hardships that made me cry, laugh, and angry. I lived through foster care with parents who loved me dearly. It made me stronger and mature during that time of pressure which comes during one's lifetime, make me realize that I should cherish what little I have left.

For as long as I can remember, I lived all over. I became best friends with the boy living on the dirt road in a little house behind my home. Even though I may not have realized it then, it made me open to different kinds of people. Being the only foster kid

Throughout my life I have lived in three cultural distinct regions Lima Peru, White Plains New York and Baltimore Maryland. For the first two years of my life I lived in Lima, Peru and even though I never culturally adapted myself into the culture I would often visit for months and immerse myself into the culture. I can say with confidence that if I grew up in that culture I would not my be the same person I am today because of the fact that they are a collectivistic country and that would change my outlook on myself and the community around me. At around my second birthday my family and I decided to move to the United States in search of a better quality of life. While most of my family live in Baltimore, Maryland my father had already established himself in White Plains, New York a…

Just checking in to see how your dog duties are coming along. I hope Emma is healing and that Diesel hasn’t eaten anyone yet. Our Foster dog almost died, was diagnosed with either/both leukemia and a stomach blockage of some sort, and then made a full recovery. We had a chance to have him put down, but I decided to give him more time and brought him home from the hospital with a prescription for Prednisone, which was expected to extend his life by maybe another 6 weeks. He’s in his third week now and, other than the shaved legs and belly, seems perfectly normal.…

With my heart about to beat out of my chest, I make my way down the long narrow hallway that takes me to the courtroom where my family is waiting . I remember seeing all of the yellow caution wet signs scattered down the hall, letting people know that they had just finished mopping the smooth white floors. As I stand in front of the tall wooden doors that separate me from the court room, I cant help but wonder what all could go wrong. Does my step dad really want to adopt me? Will the judge grant the adoption?…

Just a moment before I stepped onto the humongous metal machinery that would soar through the sky, I had doubted myself. “Am I qualified to take this privilege to go to Canada? Or would this be a foolish choice that would impact my life in a bad way?” Now, when I think back, I was quite surprised about how I wasn’t excited about the airplane ride. I guess I was just more “mature” than the other 7 years-olds.…

The way we are usually goes hand in hand with the environment we find/found ourselves in, such as the environment we grew up in. Most of us are familiar with horoscopes and we’ve most likely read the descriptions under our zodiac signs to see if what it says matches us, some descriptions are scarily accurate and some are just out of proportion. Similar to horoscopes, the Hexaco personality test had some spot on descriptions on how I am, but it had some that I strongly disagree with. I grew up in a very free and sociable environment in Mexico. I lived in a ranch with a small amount of population, and I knew most of them by the age of three.…

Every story has the same three items; a beginning, a middle, and an end. Anyone who has ever read a book would tell you that you are crazy to start at chapter three, you miss the how the story was established, the history, opening to the plot, introduction to key characters but that is what it means to be adopted. This place, where I grew up, learned about the world, experienced my first feelings and where I gained the experiences that will be beneficial for the rest of my life. This place is a small town in my home country in Serbia; it’s called Cuprija. It is a place where I lived the first sixteen years of my life; went to kindergarten, middle school and the first year of high school. Cuprija can be beautiful in some ways, but it is mostly perceived as a ‘negative’ and a ‘bad’ town because of all the crimes that happened in it and because of the local corruption. It is a town that has been through some very rough times; especially during the nineties, many companies and local businesses are shutting down, people are leaving the town and population…

Some of the most vivid and memorable experiences in the short eighteen years of my life have been at what people know as “the slums of Atlanta.” I spent more than eight years in an old, inexpensive apartment complex and I recall the happiest times of my childhood living there. To me, this apartment complex embodied the true definition of a community because of its different immigrant and cultural groups that I befriended. Most of the families living there at the time were looking for an affordable and sometimes long- term residence, saving money until having the ability to buy a house. Despite moving eventually, living in the apartments impacted me greatly because it made me appreciate the diversity and community I encountered there.…
