Personal Narrative: Becoming An American Citizen

The plane has finally landed on the runway. The door was now being swung open and I am already at the front prepared, but unaware of what awaits just outside of the airport. Whatever it is though, I will be ready. I am finally free. I am finally safe. I finally in America; where I have always wanted to be. Where I have always fascinated about and I now have the chance to be who I have always wanted to be… an American citizen.
Once outside of JFK Airport I struggled to get out of the parking lot. Seems like every taxi in the city is taken. I eventually asked for help, and was soon on my way. I got in the back seat and told the driver where I had to go; the Empire State Building. When I arrived, the lady in the lobby, Ms. Davis, told me about the careers offered here. I ended up having a job as a janitor because of my lack of education and skill. But it is a living. Forty hours a week, for nine dollars an hour. I mean, things could be worse. Luckily I was able to find a job though. Back home in Syria, my family is always running… running from danger because of their religion, never able to settle down and find a career for themselves. When they got off the plane, I met them at the luggage pick-up. My mama and papa had tears in their eyes when they took their first glance at me in four years. They were so very thankful to me for bringing them to America. We could’ve stayed at the airport and talked for hours but mama was anxious to see New York City. When we go to my apartment, papa and I started conversating about what I have done and what life was like in Iraq without me.
