Personal Narrative: A Career As A Writer

Improved Essays
You ever went out for a job and were so sure that you were qualified, but did not get the job? Maybe you had your eye on a special someone? You put your best game out there and that person still turned you down.
As a writer, I’ve had to deal with rejection many times. I put my best work out there and the editors are just not interested. Last year, I was let go from one online writing site after two years. I was told they no longer have a market audience for my genre of writing. I was blown away! I am sorry I do not write about ratchet T.V. or celebrities. I am too busy trying to uplift those who are hurt and need to see a light at the end of the tunnel.
It is very hard to be rejected or looked over for something that you know you are great

How do professional writers deal with writing blocks? Professional authors have battled with writer's block since the start of literature itself, famous authors such as Mark Twain even “offered advice” for writers to overcome writer's block: ““The secret of getting ahead is getting started. The secret of getting started is breaking your complex overwhelming tasks into small manageable tasks, and then starting on the first one,” (Van Cleave , Ryan, et al). There is no reason for strangers being malicious, to try to knock other people down when they’re not even known to you. Regardless, it is imperative that you are able to defend yourself- just as Brenda Roza did. Rejection is something we all face everyday whether it be from asking someone out, to asking our parents for money. We all come to deal with it in a variety of ways, some give up, and others are extremely persistent. Despite dealing with it everyday, we all fear it, and it can keep us from experiencing some of the most amazing journeys in life. In David Ives’, Sure Thing you can see that Billy is constantly rejected by Betty, but continuously restarts over, and keeps facing the rejection until he gets it right. Similarly, in my play No Thanks, Henry does not give up and keeps trying to sell Mary a vacuum despite her constant rejection.…

“Congratulations!!” read one post on a friend’s Facebook wall, the day after she landed an office job in her field. “So amazing!” read another. “Are you ready for your big-girl job?” asked a third well-wisher, accompanied by a GIF of Amy Poehler as Leslie Knope. “I can’t believe I finally have a real job” was the text she sent me a few days later, from the comfort of her desk, where she had been hired to do operations work for an organization she had once, a few years prior, interned for.…

I have learned so much great tips throughout these past few weeks of class that has helped me become a better writer. One reason I feel better when I write is because I understand the pre-writing process and how important it is. Prewriting is basically where you jot down all your thoughts and see if the things you wrote down are going to work for what you're writing and doing that helps build a stronger paper. Another thing that has helped me become a better writer is planning. One reason I feel planning has helped me become a better writer is because I learned that that is where you create your topic sentence and the topic sentences are what makes your essay because that's what guides you throughout your entire essay.…

Writing is different for everyone. We all have interesting stories to tell. If there is one thing that is true for every writer, it is that we all have an inner critic. Allegra Goodman advises writers how to get past their inner critic in her article, “Calming the Inner Critic and Getting to Work”. Silencing my inner judgments can be one of the most challenging parts of writing, but once the critic is silenced something magical and therapeutic emerges.…

As far back as I can remember, I've struggled to discover my one true passion. Growing up, I was surrounded by people who knew what their purpose was: my mother with her teaching, my father with his art, my grandmother with her altruism. Not knowing my aim only motivated me to find it, and from a young age, I've explored everything. I've contemplated careers from toxicology to novelist, park ranger to senator. Due to some phenomenal teachers and continuous self exploration, during my high school years I have finally discovered my niche- learning.…

I had always assumed that my talents in relation to writing had a relatively mediocre limit, a “glass ceiling” of sorts. All my early literary efforts resulted in collapse and a greater distaste for writing. For me, writing was like trying to catch sand slipping through my fingers: never attainable. I remember a much smaller version of myself sitting down with a freshly sharpened pencil, extra-wide lined paper, and leave engulfed in eraser shavings. The beginning of the story would always start off promising, but no longer than twenty minutes into writing, I would realize that my story had no conceivable ending and needed to be immediately shredded.…
