Generational and gender issues are significant topics in the workplace today because the workforce is continually changing and becoming more diverse. From this course, I have become more aware of my strengths on both issues which have significantly improved and will aid me considerably in my future goal to become a leader in the Human Resources field. I have also become more aware of areas of weakness that I need to continue to develop in. From this, I have developed actions I plan on taking to continue my growth and development. In order to be an effective manager, leaders need to understand and acknowledge that men and women have different wants and needs from their managers and employers. These wants and needs can affect their decisions to accept a job or keep the one they currently possess. An ability to meet employee needs inside and outside of work can impact their work ethic and productivity. This correlates to the subject of empathy that was also discussed earlier in the assignment. After reading the book by Gary Powell, I recognized that I still occupy gender stereotypes and biases. These gender stereotypes and biases are associated with gender roles and traits. Powell (2011) stated, “according to gender stereotypes, males are high in “masculine” traits such as independence, aggressiveness, and dominance, and females are high in “feminine” traits such as gentleness, sensitivity to feelings of others and tactfulness” (p. 39). Although I believe men and women should be equal in the workplace, I feel there are certain job roles that are specific to gender such nurses and nannies are women and doctors and engineers are male. As a person who works in the Human Resources field currently, I would never hire or not hire someone solely based on their gender. However, I do initially visualize and categorize certain genders for each role. In addition, I grew up in an Asian American household where I was taught that women should be feminine and men have a higher status than women. Parents’ beliefs and attitudes towards gender roles and stereotypes can influence how they educate and raise their children (Powell, 2011).
