Osteopathic medical school applicants use the American Association of Colleges of Osteopathic Medical Application Service (AACOMAS) to apply. Applicants normally need to have a grade point average of around 3.5 on a 4.0 scale during their college career and take the same prerequisite courses as applicants to allopathic medical schools. Osteopathic medicine is focused on preventive care. Instead of using several medications to treat a condition, osteopathic medicine wants to avoid the use. Students are taught not only to take into account the symptoms, but the whole body and how it correlates together. Though similar to allopathic schools in their core curriculum, osteopathic schools include osteopathic manipulative treatment (OMT). OMT is the use of hands on techniques to diagnosis and treat patients. Doctors of osteopathic medicine use OMT, “OMT, your osteopathic physician will move your muscles and joints using techniques including stretching, gentle pressure and resistance”
