Origami Personal Statement

The ability to use information to solve problems has been my passion ever since I started playing with Origami. At the age of four, I would sit for hours looking at picture books and watching videos on how to create moving shapes and structures. I have always taken an interest in science, which led me to be part of the medical academy in high school, one of four speciality programs offered where students could pursue a major interest before college. I attended the medical academy, where I took courses in anatomy and physiology, health and emergency response because as I thought one day I would study biology. I enjoyed learning various medical topics, but I did not envision myself becoming a doctor. As I matured, I learned about engineering

Cutting precisely on the lines, making sure I didn’t stray and accidently cut out part of an article, I carefully extracted the Sudoku puzzle from the daily newspaper before my father came to the breakfast table to read it. Then, working as fast as I could, I began deciphering the puzzle, eliminating numbers I knew didn’t belong in a certain box and writing, in tiny print, all the numbers that could potentially fit. Gradually, as the pieces came together, the completed puzzle unfolded. I glanced at the clock, scarfed down my cereal (which had gone soggy), and raced out the door just in time to catch the bus. During my hour long bus ride to school I would reflect on how I had solved the puzzle, wondering if there was a better way to approach…

Question 6 During my volunteer work at Cornerstone Ranch and Rescue, I learned that physics could be applied to any aspect of everyday life. This has helped me solidify my understanding of physics and eager to learn more. The realization of how physics is everywhere has sparked my interest to want to learn more physics in order to get a better understanding of how and why the world works the way it does. The property owner related many concepts of horseback riding and ranch work with physics-related ideas so that I could relate them to a science-based mindset.…

Pre-Experience Journal Entry I was born to be an engineer. I grew up playing math games, building lego sets, and taking apart electronics. I initially got into this particular type of science after watching many crime shows, some being Criminal Minds and Forensic Files. I have always been interested in learning and using new ideas. Throughout my life, I have invariably drawn from my life experiences, newly learned ideas and my continuing education to help problem-solve sensibly and realistically allowing me to move forward or help others reach their goals. Although I have no formal teaching experience, in my past work and involvement in organized sports, I have repeatedly used the Progressive philosophy. When dealing with 13 & 14 year olds many situations arise such as bullying, personality clashes or simply not understanding a drill or play. I deal with these situations by asking questions to stimulate a discussion, allowing them to draw on past experiences; positive or negative, consequently allowing them to come up with a solution or grasp the knowledge they are seeking.…

I expanded this interest by volunteering at a hospital and attending various health academies. In the summer of junior year, I attended the Health Leaders Summer Academy held at UCF where I learned of the integral role science plays in our bodies, on earth, and in life beyond earth. The same summer I volunteered at Florida Hospital and I am currently volunteering at Orlando Regional Medical Center. While volunteering at Florida Hospital, I truly saw the unpredictability of life when I encountered a man having a heart attack on the stairwell. Like the weather, I never know what will happen from one moment to the next.…

I have dabbled with art ever since I was a toddler. I would draw anywhere I went: school, home, and even at church. It started out as a hobby, but soon, I immersed myself into the world of art by integrating art with medicine. I have always found medical dramas to be particularly intriguing. Developing into this interest, I started writing my own medical journal, where I took notes from a book called Gray’s Anatomy and from the medical dramas I watched.…

As my summer progressed, I was also preparing for my upcoming volleyball season; when school began, I made the team, but I also began to broaden my horizons. In my first few months I became a member of Beta Club for my academic excellence, and I became a member of the Hosa Club in hopes of expanding my medical knowledge. In Hosa, I ran for office and was elected as our Historian and I learned that I possessed a hidden talent. Hosa provides a variety of medical events that begin at the regional level and gradually expand; I had the strange ability to memorize medical terminology. My life began to merge my regular activities with medical terms; when my volleyball team would workout in the weight room, I would sneak a stack of flashcards into room and study them in between reps.…
