The fourth year consolidating nursing student has to complete 360 hours of clinical on an acute care neurology unit in Kingston’s acute care hospital. This paper will be analyzing the initial foundational steps that the nursing student needs to understand before trying to apply his change project. This plan will change the current behavior of placing soiled garbage in bins that have no lids. There will be a demonstration of what type of leadership style will be used and will be effective in this clinical setting. Every culture has three specific levels that can be analyzed and critiqued (Schein, 2010). The whole hospital and neurology unit operates using the matrix structure because of the complexity of the modern day healthcare system. The matrix organizational structure is defined as having more than one formal leader. This may involve a strong and a week reporting system relationships among disciplines (Global Integration, 2013). This is evidenced in nursing as a profession because nurses are responsible to report to nurse managers, doctors, nurse practitioners, pharmacists and many more professions. In addition, nurses are accountable to the hospital, their professional college and the population as a whole (College of Nurses of Ontario, 2002). They are both congruent and all need to be considered when initiating a sustainable change for the future. It is very important to discover the level of culture by artifact, such as exposed believes and values, and underlying assumptions when wanting to make a behavior change in the institution. Learning and knowing that the hospital is a matrix structure and tall structured organization helps the nursing student to understand the formal and informal leaders within the institution.
