One Might Claim There's Good In All Evil Macbeth

Decent Essays
One might claim there's good in all evil, but is this true? In the play Macbeth written by William Shakespeare this is not the case in the least regarding the main character. Evil is prevalent with the use of supernatural characters and abilities like the witches, foreshadowing, and murder. Although Macbeth is undeniably centered around evil, there are many characters who try to challenge this attribute.

Macbeth is often considered as evil with no saving features or humanness inside of him. In A.C. Bradley's article Darkness in the Struggle for Power, Bradley argues that Macbeth is more than an evil character and is a character with whom we can identify with. The view that Macbeth is only an evil low level character who has no humanity left inside of him is not completely unjustified due to the amount of killing he does. Bradley agrees with this in the first part of his article but goes on to say more about the scenes with death in them. Bradley notes that all the scenes that contain death are all set in darkness but the darkness is contrasted with the color of blood and color for the important sections.…

Jesus, however, doesn’t fall for the devil’s tricks, unlike Macbeth. The witches simply told Macbeth that he was going to become King, Thane of Cawdor, and Thane of Glamis, which he already was. This made Macbeth think that if it was going to happen anyway, why not just hurry fate along a little bit, just like the witches and presumably the devil wanted. The weird sisters conveniently left out that part saying that if Macbeth becomes King, then the whole country will perish, and Macbeth will eventually die. Since the supernatural was not an uncommon thing talked about when this play was taking place, Macbeth believed that these sisters were psychics or just future telling witches, along with Banquo.…

You must never despair of human nature,” (Gandhi). Gandhi’s statement applies to Macbeth’s situation because, like the quote states, Macbeth is not essentially evil; however, his love for his wife influences his decisions; furthermore, the only reason Lady Macbeth has influence on Macbeth is because of her constant testing of his manhood. C.S. Lewis states, “We read to know we’re not alone.” Many books throughout the centuries are prime examples of Lewis’ statement. Reading is an escape from reality for readers to know that there are other people who are just like them. Although these characters are not genuine, they have many of the same characteristics as people in this physical world. Two stories that portray this idea are “Macbeth” by William Shakespeare and “The Jungle Book” by Rudyard Kipling.…

Shakespeare uses the antagonists of the play to prove that evil is really the result of choice and not a coincidental lining of the stars. Their willingness to go too far is what makes them evil -- they don’t respect the boundary between good and bad. Like it was mentioned previously, completely defining the boundary between good and bad is pretty much impossible; however, Shakespeare’s characters in the play possess a sense of…

How is evil presented in Macbeth and the Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde? During the Shakespearean era, the genre of gothic literature had yet came to existence. Since the time of Machiavelli, people have struggled to answer the question of whether the ends justify the means. To sum up in a definition, the saying “The end justifies the means” is used to say “that a desired result is so good or important that any method, even a morally bad one, may be used to achieve it” (Merriam-Webster) For centuries, people have quarrelled over this topic and debated whether the end result is worth the methods you used to get there. In the play Macbeth by Shakespeare, Macbeth, a lord under King Duncan, receives a prophecy from three witches saying that he will become king.
