In the novel One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, Ken Kesey depicts what is like inside an insane asylum and how the patients minds may become more distorted than when they first arrived. It is quite noticeable to the reader how patients are mistreated and falsely diagnosed. Randle McMurphy’s arrival portrays sanity entering into the asylum, contrasting to what the institution is meant for. McMurphy’s sane state of mind allows him to control the authoritative figures in the asylum and bring the other residents to justice. McMurphy’s sharp wit and creative energy allows for the reader to see his clear mental state ultimately bringing to the surface all the negative energy which surrounds the residents. A mental hospital should be a place for healing, but instead it is seen here as more of place that abducts a person’s freedom. Randle McMurphy brings a fresh sense of hope and joy to the institution, allowing the other patients that there is more to life than being cooped up inside a hospital. McMurphy truly cares about his new friends, and distinguishes which people need the most help and comforts them into fulfilling their true self. He tantalizes with Nurse Ratched, and tries to distort her carefully thought out system. Mistreatment of humanity is clearly seen, and takes away the patients’ independance.
