It is 2,300km-long ecosystem that comprises of thousands of reefs and hundreds of islands made up of over 600 types of hard and soft coral. It is one of the seven wonders of the world. It is a popular tourist destination with over 2 million visitors every year. It earns $5-6 million every year from these visits. It is a home for many animals such as 30 species of whales, dolphins and porpoises. It is also a breeding ground for animals such as six different species of turtles. The great the barrier reef is ancient and to some is dated back to around twenty million years ago. Sadly the great barrier reef is threatened by many things such as climate change, warmer ocean temperatures put stress on coral and lead to coral bleaching. The great barrier reef has experienced two mass coral bleaching events in 1998 and 2002, the bleaching was more severe in 2002, when aerial surveys showed that over more than 50% of the reef experienced coral bleaching. Sediment, nutrient and agriculture pesticide pollution from river catchment runoff is also affecting the reefs health. It was inscribed in the World heritage list in June 2007 because it was great architectural work of the 20th century. It represents multiple strains of creativity both in architectural form and in structural design, it is also a great urban sculpture carefully set in a remarkable waterscape and is a world famous building. The building is 185 metres long and 120 metres wide. The roofs are made up of 2 194 parts pre-cast concrete sections. These sections weigh up to 15.5 tonnes each. They are held together by 350 km of tensioned steel cable. The roofs weigh 27,230 tonnes and are covered with exactly 1,056, 056 swedish ceramic tiles arranged 4,253 pre-cast lids. The architectural style is Expressionate Modernism which involves innovative form and use of novel material. The sydney opera house has many purposes and holds up to 3,000 or more events each year.
