Observation: Gender Roles In The Workplace

For this observation, I decided an appropriate setting would be the mall, due to the fact that people from many different races, ethnicities, and backgrounds tend to be present on any given day. I observed people mainly near Barnes and Noble and Starbucks, however, I also examined people walking about the mall in general. To narrow the scope of my observation, I decided to focus on a number of interconnected themes: gender roles, race, ethnicity, and kinship. Gender roles is a major theme found not only in the mall, but in the grocery store, at school, at work, and even at home. A gender role is defined as a set of standards that a society puts forth to dictate what types of behaviors are generally deemed acceptable for either gender. …show more content…
For example, I observed a couple walking, in which the father was pushing the stroller as the child was walking near him. Additionally, on more than occasion I observed a father alone with the children, and from these instances it can be inferred that the mother was most likely completing any leisure or needed shopping. On two of these instances, I observed a father, without his spouse, with his children walking next to him. These observations fit very well into the theme of gender roles due to the fact that, until very recently, a man caring for his children, especially alone, would have been considered very strange and out of place. Additionally, caring for children has most always been considered a woman’s job. On one occasion, I observed, in the lounge area outside of Starbucks, …show more content…
In my observation I found that most of the people within the mall tended to be there with their family. This observation was one that I expected to find, due to the fact that the mall has commonly been a place where leisure activities occur, most commonly with friends and family. An instance in which my prediction was confirmed was when I observed a girl in purple leggings and a pink shirt playfully running with her family following close behind. On multiple occasions, I saw groups of kids with sets of parents, perhaps on a playdate. On one instance I observed a father, mother, and their special needs son walking into Barnes and Noble. All of these occurrences exhibit that kinship plays an important role in how people go about both their everyday and leisure

A set of societal norms dictating what types of behaviors are generally considered acceptable, appropriate, or desirable for a person based on their actual or perceived sex. That is the definition of a traditional gender role. One might not realize that there are stereotypes about each gender, but there is. Each gender always follows a trend that deals with that generation. Every though there is a trend to follow; there is normally still a blurred line between the roles for each gender.…

Lynn Peril’s Pink Think: Becoming a Woman in Many Uneasy Lessons argues that the construction of gender roles prompt women and men to fulfill distinct cultural positions. Peril addresses how women were bombarded with guidelines on “how to act like a lady” from the moment they were conceived. This frightening bombardment took a part in numerous aspects of women 's lives from the 1940’s to the 1970’s and was regularly driven by advertisements pitching girls ' versions of house-cleaning supplies and feminine hygiene products that counseled women to douche regularly in order to ensure a happy marriage. In this paper I will argue that the social expectations of gender roles and the profit consumerism played a crucial role to the social development of American Society from the 1940’s to the 1980’s.…

Crowds can be defined as large groups of adolescents who shared image and reputation. Through crowds adolescents can show who they are by the type of clothes they wear. They can also advertise what makes them unique and different from other people. Crowd membership is externally imposed and not necessarily a direct consequence of interaction with other members of the crowd. Some people identified themselves with a crowd; however, they do not have any direct contact with members of it.…

A gender role is defined as a set of societal expectation’s and norms for a certain gender that makes the individual desirable based on characteristics that a certain gender tends to have and the stereotypes regarding that gender. An example of a gender role is women belong in the kitchen or women don’t play videogames. The causes of these gender roles are scattered throughout history. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, “In 1950 about one in three women participated in the labor force… the labor force participation rate was 33.9 percent in 1950.” Only one in three women were in the workforce at the time due to the belief that women had to be the “perfect mother” that had to stay home and care for the children and tend to the house…

In the mall I notice that males and females tend to hang out with their same gender, or with their family, but it was not like that in the bookstore. Maybe it was because most of the people I notice that was sitting in Starbucks are mostly college students, but they were more open to the idea of a group mix of both males and females and create a study group. Compare to the mall, the people who are sitting down in Starbucks, especially the college students are less conscious about the idea of talking to the opposite sex, maybe it has something to do that they are in a small public space that they have a sense of security of talking to strangers, or maybe because they tend to sit much closer to each other compare to the food court in malls, but they are at more ease in talking to a complete stranger. But one thing that the mall and the bookstore/coffee place have in common is that the group of women talking to each other. Just like the mall the group of women usually had a group of 3 or 4, and just like the mall they tend to talk about…

People behave a certain way in a public space according to what they are taught is an appropriate social manner. Public spaces forces the individual to accept the proper social norms of conduct and to adhere to them. Public transportation is one of those public spaces that is interesting to observe because the people within the public transportation system are forced to interact with one another, when they may have never needed to interact with each other before. The public transportation system of Williamsburg gives a good depiction of this interaction through the patrons that use the public buses. People who use the public buses in Williamsburg can be put into three categories: the William and Mary Students, the service workers, and the elderly…

Reflection and Critique My observation took place on weekday morning at a local R town center, a very versatile and popular setting known for being a commonplace where friends hang out and similar to an outdoor mall where businesses profit. Every time I went there to spend time with my friends, I would never pay much attention to the other events going on around me so this time, I chose to focus on just that, what was everyone else was doing at town center. My limited analysis included the categorization and association of the type of people in the setting with where they were and what they did.…

Our culture is heavily influenced by the material objects in our world, and it has affected the social groupings in our society. While observing people I realized that material culture has heavily impacted the way people come together. A prominent piece of material culture that has been valued in our society and has lead people to become one is fashion brands. I discovered that clothing brands were a recurrent theme in specific friend groups. A few of the major brands that were very noticeable included Nike, Birkenstocks, and Vans.…

Symbolic Interactionism Symbolic interactionism is a social theory that examines and explains human activities, behaviours, and social structures based on societal interactions (Meltzer, 2014). Through them, human perceptions, beliefs, and attitudes are changed creating a new paradigm of an individual’s world. Sociologists argue that this theory is important in analyzing and shaping human fashion styles, material wealth, and social behaviours. Although there are many influences on a person’s life throughout the stages of life, social interactions are essential for personal identification and awareness.…

Gender roles, or a prehistoric, trivial aspect of human interaction is the norm on how we act, behave, and respond to things we have done. Words like “Traditional” and “Orthodox” make me sick; gender roles and stereotypes are not imperative in society. The responsibilities of the world aren’t delegated to certain genders. Gender roles must be abolished from every aspect of life. The whole idea negates all nations and limits advancement of human beings.…
