Like Seeley, Smith and Vogel (2007) suggest touch can make an individual react in the way the user wants them to: “Touch has been identified as a key nonverbal behavior used to exert power and influence in certain situations (Seeman Smith & Vogel. 2007. Pg. 766.)” This can be applied in the development of romantic relationships if a woman wants to suggest she is interested and looking to further their relationship beyond a level of friendship. Using the power of touch, a nonverbal communication skill, the opposite sex could perhaps more clearly comprehend these subtle messages for the desire of deeper, more meaningful interactions, thus furthering the relationship. Smith and Vogel propose that nonverbal communication such as body language and touch can be used to exert or maintain power over a relationship. This is a great lesson to be learned by women that feel as if they are not in control of the outcome of a date or they have no luck when it comes to kindling sparks in a new romantic relationship.
