Since the early years of the country, because of former British control, any immigrants have been judged as disliked by “natives” for not speaking English. Thus, the overwhelming majority of Americans, at least, speak English as a second language. According to McLeod, “Language comes from imitating the speech of others.” As the descendants of African slaves who were forced to leave most of their culture and traditions behind, my family has been nurtured into speaking the language. To go along with assimilation, I have also been nurtured into having relaxed hair.
