There, he grew up as a Quaker under the guidance of his father, Nathanael Greene, a self-employed farmer. Nathanael Greene jr. was the second born son under his father. Four more boys would soon be born into his family following Jacob and Nathanael. His father divulged his views on studies and literary things to any and all who would listen. He explained how everyone should only study reading, writing and business math. Rather than studying what was asked of him, Greene was adamant about learning mathematics and law and soon found his passion in learning about those challenging courses. Greene was self-conscious about his lack of educations but still talked to people of authority for wisdom which is where he met one of his closest mentors, future president of Yale University, Ezra Stiles. Nathanael went against his family and chose military service over his faith and from then on became separate from the Quakers. Nathanael Greene said, “America must raise an empire of permanent duration, supported upon the grand pillars of Truth, Freedom, and Religion, encouraged by the smiles of Justice and defended by her own patriotic sons” entailing that he, as a patriotic son, must defend his beloved country. Because of his love for military science and his moral instinct that he was called to do more for his country, the United States prospered with him as a General in the Revolutionary
