The Outsiders Movie Project
“The Outsiders” by S.E Hinton is a very interesting book. It starts off with the main character named Ponyboy who lives with his two older brothers Sodapop, and Darry. Ponyboys parents had died in a car accident just a couple of months before this story takes place. Darry, which was the oldest, was left in charge of his two younger brothers. They were told to not get into any trouble or else Ponyboy and Sodapop would be sent off to a boys home. Ponyboy was in a group called the “Greasers,” with his friends Steve, Two-Bit, Dally, Johnny, and his two older brothers. They would always be beaten up by a mighty gang of rich kids called the Socs. There are also tons of messages that can impact lots of people's lives, such as the when Ponyboy said, “They shouldn't hate each other . . . I don't hate the Socs any more . . . they shouldn't hate . . .” in chapter 9. That quote shows how people can change, Ponyboy changed by starting off hating the Socs and now accepting that the are human too. Right from the beginning to the end the characters really showed how passionate they were. One of them are that although Ponyboy at first hated the Socs, he was later on told by his friend Randy, that fighting in the rumble won’t fix anything and at the end the greasers will still be greasers and the Socs will still be Socs. Ponyboy then realized that, “Socs were just guys after all. Things were rough all over, but it was better that way. That way you could tell the other guy was human too.” Ponyboy noticed that fighting wasn’t the answer to the problem, but it takes a good friend like Randy to tell the others what they’re doing is wrong and what the right thing to do is. This scene in the book perfectly represented the main idea “Don’t judge a book by its cover.” It showed exactly what the main idea means, Ponyboy looked and realizes that Socs aren’t just tough and rich, they are also people with hearts and feelings. This message will forever stay in the world. It did way back in 1967 with Greasers and Socs and even more now in 2018. This world has come to the point where everyone is just judging people by looks and their culture. Ponyboy had noticed that Socs aren’t bad after all, so we as people should realize that not everyone in the world is bad and that there are also good people out there.
