At that time Gutzon was working on carving images and Robinson encouraged him to visit South Dakota. Borglum visited the state and reviewed his proposal. He suggested for it to be a monument that would reflect the black hills and embody the first 150 years of the nation. He also suggested that the subjects of mount Rushmore had to be presidents. Roosevelt was the 26th president of the United States. He represented the development of the United States. Roosevelt was chosen because of his leadership in the development of the country in the early 1900s and because of his contributions to conservation, business and the creation of the Panama Canal. His dedication was given on July 2, 1939. The last president to be carved on mount Rushmore was Abraham Lincoln. Lincoln was the 16th president of the United States (1861-1865). Lincoln represented the preservation of the country through the civil war. Lincoln was selected because he leaded the country through some difficult years, ended slavery and leaded the country after the civil war. Lincoln’s dedication was on September 17, 1937. Each of these presidents represented an important era including the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries because of their contributions to the growth of the United states. Mount Rushmore is significantly important because it not only depicts the faces of the four presidents but it has a historically significance in all those people who contributed to the built of this beautiful monument.
