1. Read for 20 minutes or until you finish your 1st chapter (whichever comes first).
2. Choose four different colors and assign them to the following categories: theme, setting, characterization, point of view.
3. Using just the first chapter of your novel, create a MindMap (see example on back) and include the following analysis:
a. Theme (lesson about life):
i. What big ideas do you think will be associated with this novel? Hope, Rescue, Friendship, and Danger ii. Provide 3 pieces of text evidence from chapter 1 to prove it.
• Pg. 27, “No! Stay where you are! It’s not safe here.”
• Pg. 30, “Family Emergency.”
• Pg. 36, “Go to the island… I thought I could protect you.”
iii. Draw a picture/create …show more content…
Draw a picture that represents were the story takes place.
iii. Provide 3 pieces of Imagery that pertains to the setting. (Remember: Imagery is a lit term that appeals to your 5 senses)
• Pg. 14, “He pushed back his lawn chair and went into the house, leaving me alone on the screened in lanai.”
• Pg. 21, “…the children’s home that had taken in my grandfather must’ve seemed like a paradise…”
• Pg. 33, “Bookshelves and cabinets had been emptied…couch cushions and chairs were overturned.” iv. Is this setting important to the story? The grandfather’s house is important because that is where Jacob heard the stories from his grandfather. Miss Peregrine’s home for Peculiar Children is also important because this will be the main setting and it is where the story takes place. Jacob will help protect it from the monsters.
c. Main Characters (Direct and Indirect Characterization)
i. Identify the main character(s). Jacob Portman ii. Briefly explain who they are, what they look like, and any characterization that is provided. He is 16 years old with pale skin, brown hair, and brown eyes. He wanted to be an explorer like his grandfather. iii. Draw a picture/symbol to represent at least the main …show more content…
How do you feel about the main character/other characters you have met? I thought that Jacob was a peculiar child from the beginning, but I thought the grandfather was crazy at first. Jacob’s parents don’t understand what happened to their dad when he fought in the war. They thought that the grandfather became crazy after the war.
d. Point of View (the narrator)
i. Who is telling the story: 1st person, 3rd person limited, 3rd person omniscient? 1st person (Jacob’s point of view) ii. Draw a picture to symbolize the narration.
iii. Provide 3 pieces of text evidence to show the narration.
• Pg. 12, “I had just come to accept that my life would be ordinary when extraordinary things began to happen.”
• Pg. 14, “He raised his eyebrows as if I’d surprised him with my powers of deduction.”
• Pg. 20, “I believe you’ I said.” iv. How does this point of view contribute to the story? Are there any drawbacks? It shows us Jacob’s perspective and what he’s feeling. We learn things that he has just learned about himself and everything else around him.
On the back of your mindmap:
Think about the first chapter as a whole: What is intriguing about this novel? Have any mysteries or questions come up in the first chapter? Does it start slow? Just right? Too
