Medical Knowledge In The Odyssey

Improved Essays
Medical knowledge has grown throughout the years and has helped this year's society immensely. Back in earlier societies, it didn't help with much. In earlier societies, people didn't know that veterans got PTSD and did not know how to treat it either, but as society evolved, they learned about how much the vets go through and found an effective way to treat them. When vets came home in earlier societies, people spit on them and showed disrespect, after they had just risked their lives for them and their country. The people didn't know anything they had been through and just added more pain and suffering to the soldier. The soldiers expected to be appreciated for their service, but were disappointed. Even after the war had been over for a while, …show more content…
Back then, they didn't know about it and were treated as great heroes. In The Odyssey by Homer, Odysseus, after fighting in Troy, tries to go back home, but the gods give him a long and dangerous journey back that takes 10 years. When he gets back, he finds out that there are several suitors that are trying to win over his wife and plundering his house, and he takes revenge on all of them in killing them. While Odysseus and his crew are in Cicones, they decided to celebrate and they were still in combat mode. Odysseus says, “I stormed that place and killed the men who fought… we took, and we enslaved the women, to make division, equal shares to all…” to Alcinous, after he asks of his journey(Fitzgerald Part 1 The Odyssey lines 44-46). In this part of his journey, Odysseus is talking about when they were partying and drunk, they did what they normally would have done and were violent. The reason they were let onto the island was because the Cicones were excited to have a hero and his crew visiting them, but were soon disappointed. When Odysseus came back to his home to figure out that suitors have been living in his house, although he was a king, he didn't act like one when taking revenge, but instead acted like a soldier saying, “... you took my house to plunder… dared bid for my wife while I was still alive… Your last hour has come. You die in blood” (Fitzgerald Part 2 The Odyssey line …show more content…
People can treat them by whatever way they choose, which is nice because they have a say in what they do instead of being forced to do something they don't want to do. Dogs give vets the love, loyalty, and respect they crave and writing gives them the chance to open up and express themselves. The post-war treatment of veterans has changed immensely throughout society from people taking the time to research PTSD instead of just ignoring or punishing them for it. When society first started, people didn't know what vets went through and did not put themselves in their shoes when they spit on them and called them names. Now that people have taken the time to appreciate and understand why vets act the way they do after the war, they can receive treatment and live a normal life with the rest of the civilians. In the future, helping people and vets be aware of PTSD would be ideal. People should be more aware of what vets go through on a daily basis. If people knew this, they would be highly respected and

Then the money that they do get may not be enough for them to live off of, there is also the change that they had suffered from a major injury as well as to pay for therapy to help them get by. But this stereotype could have started way back in the earlier wars when soldiers were not even given an education before, during, or after they had served in the war or even gotten any help from the government. So from there it had just been floating along with each generation of veteran explaining how bad the veterans have got for them, but with new programs that instruct our soldiers they gain skills that may very well help them when they are done with their service. That may carry on to a job in the civilian world and along with movements that get that government more involved as well with new groups and organizations that help veterans both financially, physically, and mentally. This stereotype need to be forgotten and extracted from what we think a veterans knowledge actually is, for only only the slightest thing may actually be correct about how they are unknowledgeable and unskilled to do anything else other than…
