Introduction
Although born on completely different sides of the globe, David Sedaris and Trevor Noah have one thing in common, which is their rebellion towards societal norms. Sedaris was born in New York in the United States having a loving a rather large family. Meanwhile Trevor Noah, born in South Africa with his family, but born during an apartheid. They are in certain ways one of the same both comedians with humble beginnings and a personality that contrasts the norms given by society.

In certain cases, it makes the joke that much better because in real life there is not always a punchline or a three-act structure. It is also important to note that in Sedaris’ novel is not chronological whatsoever. Meanwhile, Noah although not completely chronological, it is overall around the same timeline. Both novels do not have an overarching story line, but rather have a several stories within the book. It is most likely a stylistic choice, to make the most humor out of their stories.
Background
In Sedaris’ novel, Me Talk Pretty One Day, he discusses about his childhood occasionally and at the beginning of the novel, he describes his life in elementary school. In Go Carolina, he describes how he survived with his lisp and how he avoided certain words when talking. Also, Sedaris talks about how his mother was an alcoholic and did not play a key role growing up. However, Sedaris’ father play an interesting role in his life especially since his dad was Greek and often did not understand “American” social norms.
Noah, on the other hand, was born a crime as the title implies since he was a mixed-race child. He was born during an apartheid in South African, in which being mixed race is not allowed due to the strict segregation laws. He was not able to choose his race

In Learning Curve, humor theory is heavily applied. “Like branding steers or embalming the dead, teaching was a profession I had never seriously considered. I was clearly unqualified, yet I accepted the job without hesitation, as it would allow me to wear me to wear a tie and go by the name of Mr. Sedaris.” (Sedaris, 2000, pg.83). This is a prime example of incongruity-resolution model since it shows the audience that it is rather odd that he would take a white collared job, shortly after his history with drugs and art. No long after Sedaris (2000) mentions on how he managed to get his job as professor, “the position was offered at the last-minute, when the scheduled professor found a better-paying job delivering pizza. (Sedaris, 2000, pg.84). Like the previous example, this is incongruity since the average reader would assume a college professor would have a better salary than a pizza

Personally, I don’t believe that Sedaris is a reliable narrator, due to the fact that he is biased about the Tomkeys’ lifestyle. He thinks that since they don’t live the same lifestyle as his family does, that they’re forced to succumb to talk instead of watch the television. To Sedaris, this might seem strange, but to the Tomkeys’ it’s probably perfectly normal. Also, you can tell that Sedaris isn’t a reliable narrator, because he always tells of the negative things about the Tomkeys’. He doesn't try and find something positive about them.…

The Gourmet Problem Reading “Today’s Special” by David Sedaris made me realize that I not only agree with his disdain of gourmet food and its seeming takeover of normal restaurants with normal food but also that I am a food snob. First of all, when I order a traditional meal of meatloaf, mashed potatoes, and green beans, I expect the meatloaf not to be mixed with prunes and drowning in a peach sauce accompanied by mashed potatoes made with cauliflower –where’s the potatoes?- and vanilla green bean amandine. Then I realized that while others are snobbish about ‘normal, boring food’, I am a reverse food snob. Food does not have to be bland…

David Sedaris, in his essay Remembering my Childhood on the Continent of Africa, uses clever parallelism, thinly veiled satire, disconnected idealism, and intermittent dialogue to supplement an allegorical analysis of Security and Liberty in Human Society. Sedaris is a well-known comedic author, and his essays tend to be about one subject at face value, but an entirely different one between the lines. This clever distinction allows the reader to enjoy two stories at a time. Given this, Remembering is, at face value, the story of the contrasting lives of Sedaris, and his male “partner” Hugh. At this level, the essay itself is simplistic, sarcastic, and whimsical.…

He often comments or acts in ways contradictory to his thoughts and actions from earlier in the essay. One instance is as he is sitting in class, his teacher makes a pop-culture reference about a robot on TV. Sedaris contemplates that the Tomkeys must have thought she was having a heart attack due to her excessive movements and their lack of TV knowledge. He wonders, “what must it be like to be so ignorant and alone” (Sedaris 800)? But he should be all to wise in this matter.…

Hello motherfuker, I’m Paul Sedaris the youngest out of the whole Sedaris clan. I am loud, outspoken, and “unapologetically blunt” (65) with an unusual accent that no one quite understands. I will give you the truth even when you don’t want to hear it, but the best of all I’m the rooster that never stops hollering. I Paul Sedaris will holler and shout my profanity like it’s nobody's business, so don’t be surprised that I say every word in the book even to my parents. I smoke weed in the house and school just isn’t my thing, so I advise you to stop before wasting your time to ask me about college.…

In David Sedaris essay, “Remembering My Childhood on the Continent of Africa” he speaks of his and his partner’s childhood life. His writing is effective and meaning full especially when he speaks of his partners fifth grade trip to the slaughter house, the afternoon after seeing the moving about the talking car, and also the importance of their family. Sedaris seem to be envious of his partner’s life as a child though, he makes it clear that he is half way joking, letting readers know this right from the start. When he speaks of trip to the slaughter house he also remarks “Were there no autopsies scheduled at the local morgue?’ showing that he thought it was comical and strange.…

This story was used to representation of how his dysfunctional family operated. In his own humorous way, Sedaris sheds light on the difficulties associated with being an alcoholic and the impact it can have on trying to raise children. There are many clues littered throughout the story that hint at Sedaris’ personal identity issues, along with his regrets he has about his mother and Tiffany. Sedaris was undoubtedly a troubled writer, who used to drown away his problems with alcohol and consuming drugs and hides his true thoughts and feelings behind his humor, but has since opened up about being gay and has formed a stronger relationship with his…

David Sedaris’s essay is a satirical peace that turns the readers’ attention towards the way we live our lives. Reading, "Me Talk Pretty One Day", by David Sedaris, is like being at a stand-up comedy show. The article is full of puns and points that make you feel as though you are suffering through this French class with him. Despite all the humor in it, there are some main points I believe he is trying to convey. David Sedaris' main claim of perseverance is well argued, because the author never gives up in spite of a teacher who is rough with him, he spends extra time on his school work while immersing himself in the culture, and the author comes to realize he is not alone in his struggles. First, don't quit.…

Does comedy help promote social change? Ramon Lopez, Iain Ellis and the documentary Tickling Giants demonstrate how comedy has had some social change but has not had a positive impact on society nor promoted great social change. Ellis discusses about how The Talk Show brought about a change in society but not a positive change in which the comedian expected since the nation returned to where they started or even worse. While Lopez discuss how the comedian Jon Stewart does not promote positive social change but rather degrading change in society. I agree that comedy can have a social effect but disagree that comedians can bring about a positive change.…
