Marriage Customs and Gender Roles:
Influence of Culture in Marriage portrayed in Marissa Meyer’s Heartless According to the Merriam Webster dictionary, “marriage is the state of being united as spouses in a consensual and contractual relationship recognized by law.” This idea of marriage throughout history has been continually changing. This is due to the evolution of customs, culture, and religious beliefs that, depending on the specific geographic and social milieu, greatly differ from one another. Furthermore, marriage not long ago has become a sufficiently controversial topic because of how it has been following the same tradition for many centuries, avoiding any type of change. It has only been recently that countries around the world are allowing other types of marriage as same-sex marriage. Nevertheless, by observing Marissa Meyer’s Heartless, one can clearly see this traditional idea of marriage that has been followed throughout the times. The entirety of Heartless’ plot revolves around this marriage and how Catherine, the protagonist, is against it. This a very traditional type of marriage that became most apparent during the 18th century in Europe, in which people of high status would avoid marrying people who did not hold a rank higher or equivalent in worth to theirs.
