Mark Twain, author of “The Adventures of Tom Sawyer” and “Adventures of Huckleberry Finn” was born November 30, 1835, in Florida, Missouri. His real name was Samuel L. Clemens, but Mark Twain was his pen name. He was also a riverboat pilot, lecturer, journalist, entrepreneur and inventor (A&E Networks Television 2017). He was the sixth child of John and Jane Clemens. When he was 4 years old, he moved with his family to Hannibal, a bustling town of 1,000 people (A&E Networks Television 2017). The only individual he generally used the N word around was Jim and sometimes Huck. Huck was a loyal friend to Jim. He assisted with freeing Jim. Jim was one of the most controversial characters in American literature. In this story, Jim was very simplistic, humble, and gullible, and a trusting character, to the extent of being credulous. The main idea of this story would have to be freedom because the main two characters wanted their freedom. Huck and Jim were both bound by something and they wanted to break that chain. Huck wanted to be free from his father and Jim wanted to be free in general. Since Huck and Jim traveled to so many places there are many settings in this book. So of the settings were Mississippi River along Missouri, Illinois, and Arkansas. It was made sometime in the 1830s-180’s when slavery was made legal. The tone of the story is another thing because there were lot of tones in the story. Some parts of the story the tone would be humorous, some would be sad and serious. But I think throughout the whole book that it was made to be serious/humorous. While Jim was sleep Tom went and took Jim hat and puts it on a tree branch above Jims head. They almost got caught in the act, they hid until Jim was no longer there. Tom was a character with an very imaginative mindset. He developed the idea to begin a gang. The mission of the gang would be to rob people of their money and leave them with nothing remaining. “Now, we’ll start this band of robbers and call it Tom Sawyer’s Gang. And nobody that didn’t belong to the band could use that mark, and if he did, he must be sued; and if he did it again he must be killed. And if anybody that belonged to the band told the secrets, he must have his throat cut, and then have his carcass burnt up and the ashes scattered all around, and his name blotted off of the list with blood and never mentioned again by the gang, but have a curse put on it and be forgot forever. (Twain 2005) ” In this quote that I extracted from “The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn” it is referencing the oath that Tom had recorded.
