The North is superior in navigation, commerce and manufacturing, and much to the chagrin of the South as Hinton Rowan Helper writes in Document 2 the North is also superior when it comes to agriculture. The South is “far behind the free States in the only thing of which she has ever dared to boast- agriculture.” Helper goes on to give some statistics that show that the north produces $45,782,636 more in agriculture than the South does. The South responds to this again by citing their ease of life compared to that of their Northern neighbours. What use is an advantage in these fields when it makes life full of hardships? The South is proud of their economy because it allows them much more leisure time than the Northern economy. Each side felt that their lifestyle and culture was superior to the others. The North had their freedom from slavery and their pride in their industry and commerce. The South argued that their relatively easy and comfortable lives were proof of a more advanced society. Slavery was what allowed the South to live in such comforts and they were willing to allow it, while the North saw it as a vicious and barbaric
