Leadership Lone Survivor: The Eyewitness Account of Operation Redwing and the Lost Heroes of Seal Team 10 is an autobiography about Operation Redwing an operation in northern Afghanistan where four Navy SEALs sought out to capture or kill a notorious al Qaeda leader. The mission ultimately did not go as planned to leave only Marcus Luttrell alive to recall the story through his eyes.
First and foremost, Lieutenant Michael Murphy continually received praise from Luttrell throughout the novel and touched upon him to be, “Better than anyone under fire, always thinking, fearless about issuing the one-option command even if it was nearly impossible. And the final, utterly heroic act. Not a gesture. An act of supreme valor,” (Luttrell 272). Lt. Murphy made the ultimate sacrifice to help save the other SEALs by making the call for extra help out in the open, exposing his body to be seen by the Taliban. Once the team allowed the goatherd to go and ascended far enough up the mountain to set up camp Mike Murphy was telling jokes about going to the Taliban village to see if he could borrow a phone. Marcus Luttrell wrote that the jokes from Mike, “Showed that we all felt better now; not absolutely A-OK, but cheerful enough to get to our work and toss out the occasional light remark. More like our old selves, right?” (240). In such a tense situation where the team diverts from original mission in foreign land a joke in the hopes of calming down his teammates can allow for better performance. The jokes make the SEALs feel as if they are at the United States base hanging out and not about to engage in the biggest battle of their
