Kyra Cabaret Analysis

Decent Essays
I highly enjoyed Kyra Selman cabaret show at Rockwell. She did an amazing job telling a story in a musical genre. Songs that really stood out are I am what I am, Drunken Love, and Black Girl Medley. The reason those songs stood out because most likely they are songs I have heard already, while majority of the other songs in Kyra cabaret I did not recognize and can not give a name. I enjoyed the whole show but the areas where I know the songs help me remember the story.
I believe when Kyra was explaining the time how she was the only female working in a gay bar, she set it the story in a comedic manner. Kyra mentioned how she was the nice girl who had to kick the men out when they were drunk, because she seem the nicest out of all the guy. Unfortunately a man called her bitch, at first she was extremely upset. Eventually she came to realize the she is a bitch, a Fierce Vixen Bitch. After the realization Kyra sang I am what I am from the musical La Cage aux Folles, which is a song

This part of the story did not have much story. Before the song she mention that her life in New York and she didn’t have much luck booking roles in those iconic black women roles. The medley was well executed, singing songs that get the audience excited. And she ended the great medley with I’m telling you from Dream Girls.
If I was to create a cabaret I would try to make a more present tense show rather past tense. I would probably have multiple characters who are coming to a job interview. It would be showing the character process through the interview and see how they handle under pressure and of course they all break into song. I think that would be a fun entertaining challenge that I and the audience would enjoy. Cabarets are shows that need lots of thought and hard work. Kyra did an excellent job performing her show and I am extremely proud of

Part 1: In Langston Hughes’s poem “Song for a Dark Girl” was published in 1927 which was the beginning of the Harlem Renaissance. This poem highlights the lynching of a young black woman which was of the norm during white supremacy. During that time, the Jim Crow laws were still in affect and it enforced the separation of races (pbs.org). For a white man to sleep with a black woman was forbidden but the white man would not be punished; the black girl would be hung and put on display like a dead animal. This poem speaks to this horrific act that would happen often during this timeframe.…

    Broadway Musical Analysis

When professor mentioned that we would watch and discuss about a Broadway Musical show named ‘Memphis’, the first that came to my mind was, the actual city Memphis in the southern state of Tennessee. I was still confused as to how a city and its activities could be incorporated into a Musical show, which is assumed to be entertaining with melodramatic components, dance and music. I had an assumption that it would be academic, political, boring since it is to be watched in a classroom setting and that a professor would not choose something entertaining or something of the liking of the younger generation. I deduced that this play might touch the topic of race since race defined how a person is treated in most southern states. I assumed that…

Over at NYCB, for the past three weeks night after night houses have been heavily sold and celebrities (Mandy Patinkin, Tommy Tune, and countless ballet luminaries from the past like Mikhail Baryshikov, Patricia McBride, Wendy Whelan, etc.) have been spotted at many performances. The Jerome Robbins Centennial Celebration was certainly a box office success. I didn't get to every all-Robbins performance but I did see three programs (Interplay/The Cage/Other Dances/Fanfare, In G Major/Afternoon of a Faun/Antique Epigraphs/The Concert, and Opus 19/The Dreamer/Dances at a Gathering/Glass Pieces) and this concentration of Robbins works was illuminating. First of all, it confirmed why his biggest classics are staples of the repertoire -- they make their effects every single time.…

Issues perceived as women’s problems formed the crux of ‘alternative or parallel cinema’ of the 1950s and 1960s era. The New Cinema Movement of the 1970s was an attempt to bridge the two worlds of popular and art cinemas. This time saw the churning of many women-oriented movies in Bollywood. But, some success in popular cinema of such movies saw the light of the day only during 1990s.…
