I have always been very good at drawing and have always used this skill when trying to learn something new. Who knew there was a name for this style of learning? As a kinesthetic learner, I learn by doing; having direct involvement.
There are many differences and similarities between Kinesthetic Learning preference some learning theories. For example, behavioral theories support the teacher-centered approach, whereas kinesthetic learners thrive in a student-centered environment. Kinesthetic learners prefer to learn new or difficult information through 'real-life' experiences. This approach is advocated by Cognitivists who suggest ‘real life’ provisions …show more content…
I remember ‘real’ things that happened and gain from using specific examples.
Kinesthetic learners such as myself do best while touching and moving. This means I can lose concentration if there is no stimulus or movement. I fidget a lot and use various forms of art (music, images, dance) to help me learn.
Behaviorism is based on visible changes in behavior. It focuses on a new behavioral pattern being repeated until it becomes an unconscious act. Behaviorists believe that people’s actions are driven by a need to gain rewards or avoid punishments. An example of this would be, presenting a positive stimulus preceding a behavior. Consequently, the behavior increases.
Behavioral theories support "direct", or "teacher-centered" instruction. However, Kinesthetic learning is a type of active learning where learners involve themselves in their education. Using the teacher-centered approach produces the most basic levels of intellectual behavior (Bloom’s Knowledge, Understand, Application). Active learning, conversely, is student-centered and provides learners with the time and space to reach complex levels (Bloom’s Analysis, Synthesis, Evaluation) of intellect. Constructivists believe knowledge cannot be "delivered" or "imprinted" on others. Exploiting their unique experiences with the world a learner can build their own knowledge.
The constructivists approach is similar to the kinesthetic learning style in that learners build their own knowledge by exploring environments, manipulating objects, testing hypotheses, and by drawing conclusions.
The three strategies I will employ to use my kinesthetic learning style are as follows:
Writing, Diagramming and Mapping – while studying I will use words and images to help reinforce the material.
Tying Study to Various Motions – I will try to connect different movements to ideas to reinforce my memory of them. For example, clicking my fingers to ideas.
Frequent Breaks – I will ensure I work for a total of several hours, focusing heavily for thirty minutes at a time and taking fifteen or twenty minute breaks after each period of
