Katniss Hero's Journey Essay

During the beginning of the movie The Hunger Games Katniss Everdeen commences her "Hero's Journey". In the beginning of the film Katniss' ordinary life is shown to the audience, including her poverty-stricken district, her small-knit family, and her friendship with a boy named Gale. The first step in the Hero's Journey is "The Ordinary World", in which the hero's normal life is examined before they go on their actual journey. On the day of the infamous reaping, in which two tributes (a girl and a boy) are chosen from each district to participate in The Hunger Games, Primrose Everdeen (Katniss' sister) name is drawn. At the start of the movie Katniss is portrayed as the main character. The woman who drew Prim's name from the bowl is known as Effie Trinkett. On the train ride to the Capitol, she is introduced to the man who will be mentoring her for the upcoming games. This man is a previous Hunger Games victor known as Haymitch. Haymitch fulfills the "mentor" archetype quite literally. He is tasked with training Katniss so that she is prepared when the Hunger Games commence. The tribute that is sent along with Katniss to compete in the Hunger games is a boy named Peeta. Haymitch forces Katniss to become allies with Peeta so that they can get support from donors. Throughout the Hunger Games, both of them help each other along the way. Before the games actually commenced, there were training days set up to prepares the tributes. Effie Trinkett fulfills the role as the herald because, if she had not drawn Prim's name, Katniss would not have volunteered to be a part of the Hunger Games. There were many archetypes that presented themselves during the beginning of the movie, yet there were still some that were introduced later
