Love is unique, it’s an emotion that we suppress. We bury it deep inside ourselves till we find that special someone, then we set it free. It takes control of our bodies, our mind, our way of thinking, and our actions. For the purpose of believing we love someone. What if the person that you loved, didn’t love you back, or if it was misguided by lust instead or they were using you? In the short story “Aurora” by Junot Díaz, Lucero believes that he is love with his on-and-off again girlfriend Aurora, but his love is mistaken for lust.

Lucero believes he is in love with this girl Aurora, while it’s clear that she is not feeling love but merely lust. The want for attention, and to feel loved is there. In the story, Aurora comes to Lucero’s apartment and starts knocking on the door, knowing he will come and answer the door for her. They haven’t seen each other in a week. Answering the door Lucero, is concerned, asking her if she’s okay. Aurora responds with “I just want some company” (214). Knowing that Lucero will provide company and a feeling of love towards her and affection, she comes to him. When in need of this. He’s an easy target for her to get money and drugs. She knows that he’s in love with her. “I wake up, alone, the blood doing jumping jacks in my head, I see that she’s searched my pockets, left them hanging out of my pants like tongues” (215). This is an example of how Aurora only comes to Lucero when she needs something. She comes around to stole his money, she doesn’t bother to be discrete, leaving the pockets open to let him and the reader know she only come there for one reason. She was not there for love.
