The Supreme Court has the responsibility of interpreting laws. A ruling made by the Supreme Court can only be overturned by a subsequent ruling of the same court. When a case reaches the Supreme Court, the court can potentially consider it from three different angles. First, they are sometimes called to apply existing laws, and sometimes existing precedent, to specific cases. More often they need to interpret the meaning of a law when that meaning is disputed.
