“Sometimes I am two people. Johnny is the nice one. Cash causes all the trouble. They fight.” An individual can impact society in a positive or possibly negative manner and Johnny Cash definitely had an impactful life. He was born into a poor, nominal, farming family and had close to nothing during his boyhood. Now, he is know as the father of modern country music. He unquestionably had a rough childhood and his music surely inspired many. Although, he had a great career he, no doubt, made many mistakes. He was certainly a leader, and, in the eyes of many, will always be.

From his brother’s death to the great floods of Arkansas, Cash wrote songs about it all. Except this time, not only did he just record music, Cash also had special appearances on radio barn dance programs, network television shows, and even in movies. “His star ascended higher still in 1958, when he departed from Sun Records and signed with Columbia Records, one of the nation’s biggest recording companies at the time.” (The Scribner Encyclopedia of American Lives) Unfortunately, Cash struggled with substance abuse, especially after his divorce with Liberto. In that time he put out 96 albums and has won at least 45 awards. He has also had seven Hall of Fame inductions. “When Cash died the world remembered a singer who embodied the American experience by singing and writing about its rural backbone and speaking for its common man.” (The Scribner Encyclopedia of American Lives) Cash, also known by many now as the “Man in Black” is probably the most documented country music artist in history because of the two autobiographies and one novel he wrote and the many biographies written about him. Many of his listeners say he “Uniquely demonstrated the power of music to comment on injustice and human condition.” All in all, Johnny Cash definitely represents a leader. He was courageous, benevolent, and he had discernment. Cash revolutionized country music, anyone needs to have courage to do that. Courage is having the mental or moral strength to withstand fear or difficulty. He stepped outside the box and tried something new and has a long lasting legacy because of it. Second, he was able to recognize his mistakes with drugs and the type of music he recorded and fix it, this shows discernment. A person shows discernment
