Joe Paterno Case Study

Decent Essays
I think Joe Paterno’s position with respect to structural violence was that he may have acknowledged what Jerry Sandusky was doing but never actually saw anything so maybe he thought it wasn’t really his problem or his business. I think that if Joe Paterno had known that students or even the community would respond the way that they did about the scandal, he possibly could have done more to bring awareness to what was going on. I think Joe Paterno’s position was that he had built his reputation as a winning coach in college football history, he had a social status to uphold and he had resources available to him. I think Joe Paterno didn’t think that he could or would be part of the scandal that was exposed should it ever be exposed. Joe Paterno

Jerry Sandusky was considered an excellent citizen to the community during his tenure as an assistant coach at Penn State. He assisted under head coach Joe Paterno and founded a charitable organization that helped disadvantaged youth; unfortunately, he was a serial child rapist (Crandall, Parnell, & Spillan, 2013). The general public wished someone had known of his actions, when in fact, there were people at the University how did and they performed internal investigations. Reviewing notes and emails of the high ranking officials at Penn State University reveal the actions were discussed with various groups, but not the board of trustees (Crandall, et al, pg. 19, 2013).
