John B. Watson described psychology as “that division of Natural Science which takes human behavior—the doings and sayings, both learned and unlearned—as its subject matter”. Early behaviorists inferred that all behaviors are acquired through conditioning, and until today, behaviorists believe that humans’ actions are shaped by responses to environmental stimuli. However, in 1959, Noam Chomsky’s critical review of B. F. Skinner’s Verbal Behavior helped spark the “cognitive revolution”.
