Obesity and overweight can be defined as having too much body fat. It is measured by BMI, body mass index. An overweight BMI range is between 25.0 and 29.9 and an obese range is anything over 30. Obesity can be caused by genes, early life influences, diets, activity, and environment. Genes play a small role in obesity. They increase the risk of gaining weight, but gaining weight can be prevented by a healthy lifestyle. Early life influences include prenatal and postnatal influences. “Pregnant mothers who smoke or who are overweight may have children who are more likely to grow up to be obese adults.” Gaining too much weight as a child can play a role in obesity later in life. They can make P.E. classes mandatory, start lunch programs, plant a garden, and make water more accessible. P.E. classes should be mandatory because they can help get the recommended amount of exercise. “The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services recommend that young people aged 6-16 years participate in at least 60 minutes of physical activity daily.” (Childhood Obesity Facts) Children do not exercise enough during a day. About 30 percent of children get 20 minutes a day. With P.E. classes everyday or even every other day children could have a better chance of getting the daily recommendation of exercise. Children who exercise regularly also do better in school, feel better about themselves, and have less depression. (Changing Diet and Exercise for
