How Does Fate Play A Role In Macbeth

“Tomorrow and tomorrow and tomorrow, Creeps in this petty pace from day to day.” (Falcon, 5.5.19-20) The events of the play Macbeth were not caused by the character Macbeth himself, but by fate. The events are orchestrated by fate, otherwise known as the witches by telling Macbeth that one day he will become king, the meeting among the witches and Hecate, and the formation of the witches brew. Without the involvement of the witches the outcome of Macbeth’s life as well as the events of the play would be different. Fate is demonstrated when the witches give their first prophecy. After the first meeting with the witches Macbeth’s ambition and sense of invincibility grows. In a meeting between the witches and Hecate, they discuss their influence on Macbeth. “And that distilled by magic sleights Shall raise such artificial sprites As by the strength of their illusion Shall draw him on to his confusion.” (3.5.26-29) In the quotation Hecate, the head of the witches, makes plans to intervene with Macbeth by fooling him with illusions, ultimately leading to a disastrous fate. At first, she is hesitant because the witches have been manipulating Macbeth without her knowledge. After words her involvement in the life of Macbeth becomes pleasant to her ears. They all talk with calmness despite them planning on corrupting a life. This shows how ruthless all the witches are and how they will stop at nothing. The extremes the witches go to are the cause of Macbeth’s shift in personality. Overall, the extremes the witches have gone to influence Macbeth caused him to commit the extreme act known as murder. The second prophecy the witches reveal to Macbeth alter the events of the
