I grew so afraid of being judged by others that I became reticent and unwilling to venture into unfamiliar territory. Choir changed all that. Choir helped me to discover that self-respect anchored with great friends can change a person. Upon entering my first day of middle school, I noticed a class on my schedule that I did not sign up for. That class was choir. I was horrified at the thought of publicly exposing myself to the mass of cruel, evil monsters commonly referred to as middle school students. I knew I would face constant, unrelenting ridicule and crass remarks would be hurled at me on a daily basis. Choir students were at the bottom of the food chain. Choir was the equivalent of being sentenced to capital punishment, or so I thought. …show more content…
No student had to perform, this performance was strictly voluntary. I, was terrified at the thought of being judged but I was also overwhelmed by a sense of adventure. With the support of my friends I decided to take a leap of faith. Days passed and it was time to perform my solo in front of the judges. I was more nervous than I had ever been before, but I knew I had to do this, my self-respect depended on it. I entered the solo room. My stomach turned and the room got extremely hot. The judges asked me if I was ready to perform and I nervously replied “yes”. The music began. A few days later I was informed that I had scored a “one”, the highest score possible! I was filled with joy. Not only had I performed well, but I realized that my fears of facing harsh judgement could be dealt with by the support of my friends and the respect for myself I acquired through that solo performance. Choir gave me the outlet to gain the self-confidence I needed. Friendship made the experience

I was absolutely mind boggled by the reactions that I perceived from the stage! I saw my tough and not-so-sensitive dad sobbing, my non-believer friend attentive, and the rest of the congregation worshipping with me. I got my first standing ovation. I was so proud to take it in with my fellow praise team members. Come to find out, by practicing with my team in front of people, we influenced them to ask our praise team leader, “What is so different about these kids?”…

Middle school can be an odd and rough time for kids, as they change from being sheltered youth to responsible young adults. I failed miserably at handling that transition. The classes taught in middle school were supposed to be easy, especially now that I look in retrospect. Yet, I regularly brought home B’s and low A’s, at best, on my report card. I had barely challenged myself in middle school, if at all.…

My ears ring as the old school bus screeches to a halt. We hop off, and a dry, winter gust smacks my face. Instantly, the frigid wind sends my nose running. Walking towards the back door of the school, I grasp the cold metal handle, open it, and slam a piece of wood underneath to keep it ajar. After we become accustom to the cold shock, Mrs. Cimenski, our director, orders us to haul the heavy wooden tables and a set of four lockers toward our designated backstage area.…

At only 7 years old, in August of 2005, I received the most devastating news anyone my age could have received. I was told by my family that a hurricane was coming to my city; New Orleans, Louisiana. Because of this storm, Hurricane Katrina, I was told that I would most likely have to move away for a long time; which meant the rest of my life. The hurricane ended up destroying the entire city completely. This was heartbreaking to me for a plethora of reasons, the main one being that I was so young and was just getting a taste of what the rest of my life had to offer.…

The large speakers that surround the filled room begin to vibrate as the loud unknown voice begins to announce my name. I now know that it is my time to shine. While standing behind the long, red curtains I begin to do what comes natural; lifting my head as if I am looking above and beyond the ceiling that lies above me with a smile projecting from my face, standing tall with strong energy from my toes to the tips of my fingers and pushing my shoulders back to respectfully greet my judges. The adrenaline pounds in my chest, but confidence over powers and I am nothing but ready to entertain my audience. The loud roars of encouraging chanting and cheering rings in my ears as I walk towards the spotlight that gives off a warm radiant heat where I hit my beginning position.…

When the word “home” is defined in a dictionary you are given definitions like “the place in which one’s domestic affections are centered” or “any place of residence or refuge” but to me home means so much more. To me, home is theatre. Those who know me well will attest that the change in me throughout this experience is drastic. Theatre transports me to places I couldn’t dream of otherwise and two years ago, I was taken to a place that would change my life forever and theatre transformed to the place I call home. It is often said that teenagers begin discovering themselves in high school, but I did the opposite- I lost myself. The source of my pleasure and delight shifted from books to parties, writing to boys, and video-games to my social life. Something within me desperately craved to be normal- to no longer be the girl that gets harassed and ostracized for being an “appalling nerd” and because of this, vital aspects of my personality began to change and I morphed into an entirely different person. Through this journey, I learned that my self-hate was a catalyst for self-love and appreciation. Having always been considered an unusual girl in the eyes of my peers, I'd never been truly comfortable in my skin.…
