Studies performed by Dean Hamer in 1993 and Nan Hu in 1995 found a connection between homosexual males and the X chromosome. What they found was “significant linkage at Xq28 for 64 percent of homosexual male siblings but not for homosexual females (Xq28 is band 28 of the long arm of the X chromosome)” (Robinson). What this means is there is a connection between a found anomaly in the genes of a homosexual that is not seen in a heterosexual. This supports the theory of the genetic link to homosexuality along with the study done by Kenneth Kendler in 2000 who analyzed the factors leading to homosexuality in twin siblings. They found that there was a higher probability for the monozygotic (have identical DNA structure) twins to be homosexual than dizygotic (only share half of their genes) twins or regular siblings (Robinson). With every study, homosexuality is progressively shifted from being seen as a choice to a biological characteristic such as eye or hair color. Marriage is not limited to one’s hair or eye color, so there is no reason for it to be confined to only heterosexual …show more content…
The intensity of the stress that burdens homosexuals varies in different areas of the United States. As a result, people who distinguish themselves as gay, lesbian, or bisexual are more likely to fall victim to anxiety, depression, and suicide (Smart). No matter how harsh it seems, not one person should have to struggle because he or she differs from the majority. This grievance is known as “minority stress.” Dr. William C. Buffie stated in his paper concerning public health implications of same-sex marriage, “Minority stress results in a struggle for validation and acceptance, which reinforced the chronic, everyday stress that interferes with optimal human development and well-being” (Smart). The majority is the source of the problem. Radical conservatives put pressure on the gay community with their harsh claims and prosecution. Perspectives are able to be changed and in this case, the paradigm of people opposed to gay marriage can be shifted to understand and accept divergence. Marriage is capable of solving this problem and balance the health differences between same-sex and heterosexual
