Recruitment structures were created by the students and were put into the Galveston Ship Channel and left for five weeks to allow adequate time for organisms to adhere to it. A full mesh cage was put onto the ends of the structure at the surface and 1 meter below the surface as well as a partial cage and no cage to get a better understanding of what they prefer. The hypothesis for this study is that the structure at 1 meter depth and with a full…
1.Summarize the information from the group visual The visual contains the role and impact the inverse specie,Green Crab has on the ecosystem. The Green Crab is native to Europe but at time went by it spread to America, australia and is at risk of spreading all over the world. The spread of Green Crabs was most likely by natural dispersal in the oceanic currents,or by domestic dispersal mechanisms. Also Green Crabs can tolerate a wide range of environmental extremes such as cold temperatures, low salinities, etc ,which means controlling their population is very difficult. The invasion of green crabs has huge impact on the ecosystem as they are carnivore, who eat Oysters, clams and hundreds of other Species.…
At that time, you’ll be able to see the mudflats and rocky shore, which are home to many animals, like sand crabs. To make sure you get this optimal viewing, consult a tide chart as tides change daily. All forms of collecting are prohibited in the Crab Cove Marine Protected Area. Further, while you’re invited to explore, you’re asked to do so carefully. If you move any small rocks, put them back in their original position as intertidal creatures are sensitive to the sun and wind.…

For my summer reading assignment, I chose the book “Cloud and Wallfish” by Anne Nesbet. I chose this book because I prefer fiction over nonfiction and I’ve enjoyed historical fiction in the past. My thoughts on this book changed rapidly once I read the book jacket. The summary Baxter provided in the PDF compared to the summary on the book jacket were very different. Now that I have read the book, I have some thoughts.…
Another animal adapted to the abiotic factors of the Nudgee Beach mangrove ecosystem is the common soldier crab (Mictyris longicarpus). The common soldier crab is a small crustacean that typically travels in “armies” of thousands to ensure strength in numbers when feeding. Soldier crabs feed off of particle detritus in the mudflat sediment and retreat back into the sand as the tide rises [11]. With their jointed legs and pointed dactylus, soldier crabs are able to burrow underground and can remain secluded – by creating an air pocket around them – for as long as the tide is high. This…
Zebra mussels are a small bivalve mollusk that originate from Eastern Europe and Western Asia (kdheks.gov). Zebra Mussels get their name because, of their cream and black stripes on their shells. Zebra mussels have small dime sized, triangle shaped shells. Zebra Mussels in large numbers are known as colonies and can contain millions of individual mussels. They’re known as an exotic invasive species because they are nonnative to US waters.…
The Florida Manatee, aka Sea Cow, or West Indian Manatee, is found in 7 to 10 feet of water in the Gulf of Mexico and the Atlantic Ocean during spring, summer, and fall (National Geographic, 2016). Later, in the winter you can find them near power plants, and in natural spring water that sustains temperatures above 68 degrees Fahrenheit because manatees cannot live in water below this temperature. This fascinating herbivore can live in salt water and fresh water. The endangered Florida Manatee has a unique body with extraordinary lung capacity, an attractive life cycle, and a fascinating but tragic history. Background and Description…
In South Louisiana, shrimping is a way of life. There is a long history of fishermen communities in Louisiana. Since the 1700s fishermen have taken advantage of the marshes and estuaries on our coastline. There are two types of fishermen; those who shrimp with the smaller vessels in bays and shallow water and those with larger vessels which shrimp offshore in federal waters. I come from a family of shrimpers who make their living in the Gulf of Mexico.…
Horseshoe crabs are an important part of the ecology of coastal communities. During the nesting season, especially in the Mid-Atlantic States, horseshoe crab eggs become the major food source for migrating birds. Over 50% of the diet of many shorebird species consists of horseshoe crab eggs. Many bird species in Florida have been observed feeding on horseshoe crab eggs. In addition, many fish species rely on horseshoe crab eggs for food.…
A keystone species play a far more important role than it’s relative abundance suggests. These species are the center pieces of their given communities and without them their ecosystem and habitat will fall apart. Keystones species are generally found in low numbers are often apex predators that control distribution and population, but are not limited to food sources, mutualistic species, and different providers. Some of these species are even ecosystem engineers that create or maintain habitats for other species. Two of the most amazing keystone species are the sea otter and the American alligator.…

SeaWorld is a family oriented, recreational theme park where individuals can pay around 80 dollars for one day admission to experience live orca shows, ride roller coasters, and visit animals in the aquarium exhibits. SeaWorld is an entertaining vacation option; especially for families. Although, many people who have visited SeaWorld do not know the behind the scenes care of the orcas in captivity. SeaWorld mistreats orcas, which in turn creates stress, and a shorter, unhealthy, and unhappy life for the whales in captivity.…
Based on “What of this Goldfish Would you Wish”, “The American Flag Stands for Tolerance”, and my own experience, our relationships with others define who we are by showing what we are passionate about. In “What of this Goldfish Would you Wish?” By. Etgar Keret Yoni, a young man is intrigued in making a documentary so he can knock on doors and ask people what they would wish for if they had three wishes from a magical goldfish. Yoni is interested to examine the different answers and to document all of it.…
