The narrator explains the body and man whom he had killed. It was the first man he had ever killed. “There was a butterfly on his chin, his neck was open to the spinal cord and the blood there was thick and shiny and it was on the wound that had killed him.” (page 118) Tim O’Brien tells the reader of how he sees a butterfly on the dead body. O’Brien is devastated and in shock after the death, he does not move or say a single word to anybody. In my opinion, the butterfly served as his innocence in the war that is now gone, “The butterfly was gone. The bleeding had stopped except for the neck wounds.” (page 123).
Ambush:
In the chapter “Ambush”, one object that functions as a symbol is the grenade O’Brien used to kill the young man. “The grenade was to make him go away-just evaporate- and I leaned back and felt my head go empty and then felt it fill up again.” (page 127). O’Brien was in shock and confusion all as it happened, he saw the man and with no instinct, he threw the grenade. “I had already thrown the grenade before telling myself to throw it.” (page 127).
Style:
In the chapter “Style”, one object that functions as a symbol is the young girl dancing Azar sees. The girl was just dancing, after what seemed to be an attack, the young girl’s family was killed. “When we dragged them out, the girl kept dancing.” (page 129). This girl is used to show how much loss and tragedy takes place in war
