Last semester, I worked with a student that struggled with writing and reading where as my student this semester does those two things with ease. As mentioned in the previous question, Jackie made a comment that was disrespectful. Fletcher and Portalupi (2011) talk about about share sessions when it comes to a writers workshop. They discuss how “the tone should be positive and celebratory. But it must be handled carefully, especially at the beginning, because you are setting a tone for the workshop” (p. 41). Luckily, the comment the student made did not affect the other student’s decision to share. But the comment was made and it showed me that when running a student share session, regardless of it is literacy or another subject area, I need to be aware of what students say and make sure to address any issues with the student privately to make sure it does not happen again. Especially for these young writers, hearing something negative about themselves right before they share could easily leave a negative impact on their feelings towards writing even if the comment was not about their writing
