Graphic novels appeal to many people for the reason that they are easier to follow. For people who have a hard time focusing on a traditional novel or for younger children, illustrations can help the reader to follow along with the plot and collect the details that the author is trying to convey to them. The illustrations can help reel the reader into the story as they watch the characters come to life in front of them. I was a very big fan of the plot of This One Summer however I did not particularly enjoy the style in which Mariko Tamari illustrated. At some points I found myself getting distracted by the pictures and not fully paying attention to the plot.
When addressing a more practical side of the differences between a novel and a graphic novel, cost is the first thing that comes to mind. Because of the added effort in creating and publishing graphic novels, as well as the smaller market, they tend to be much more expensive than a traditional novel. This factor alone deters many people from purchasing them. Especially when you can sit down and finish the entire book in a couple of hours.
The length of graphic novels attracts some while it deters others. Some people love the idea of finishing a book quickly because of the sense of accomplishment. Others prefer hundreds of pages that they can invest themselves in for days and even weeks before having to say goodbye to the characters.
