Tom makes his best friend, Huck, join his gang. “Now, we’ll start this band of robbers and call it Tom Sawyer’s Gang. Everybody that wants to join has got to take an oath, and write his name in blood,” (Twain 7). This quote shows one that Tom likes to be in control and likes to be in charge . This also shows one that Tom does not really care for other people 's lives, he just wants to be in a gang because he thinks it is fun. Tom is a very bad role model to Huck, he idolizes him to the point it is almost like hypnotism. Tom also influences Huck even when he is not there. “Why, you’d think it was Christopher C’lumbus discovering Kingdom-Come. I wish Tom Sawyer was here,” (Twain 69). This quote shows the reader that Huck admires Tom’s adventurous side and he wishes he were more like him. He puts his and Jim’s life in danger to seem cooler to Tom. This quote shows the reader that the con men know what they are doing. This also shows the reader the con men have no respect for anyone, all they do is try to scam for money, no matter who they offend. The con men are the worst people this novel. One critic states that the Duke and the King are downright scum .“Although they had never met before, the King and Duke soon join forces to concoct a number of scams to play on the innocent inhabitants of the various towns along the riverbanks. Even though he is aware of their true characters,” (Diane Telgen). This critic uses the example of the con men’s scam to show just how evil they really are. The con men also sell Huck’s friend Jim to a man for $40 for alcohol. “No! That old fool sold him, and never divided with me, and the money’s gone,” (Twain 219). This quote shows the reader just how pathetic the King is. The King sells Huck’s friend Jim for booze and he does not even share the money with his partner. The king is a very hateful, conceited man who will do anything to get his way. A critic from Novels for Students shows their audience how filthy the con men are with this act of hate. “The King and Duke
